Former Clemsonfootball quarterback Cade Klubnik is already making impressive throws at New York Jets training camp. That's cool. But that's the bare minimum. The former Clemson quarterback was drafted because of his arm talent, mobility, and flashes of high-level play. Reports of 50-yard touchdowns and eye-opening third-down conversions are encouraging, but they do not address the biggest concern in Klubnik’s game: whether he can consistently process the field, make the correct decision, and deliver in high-pressure moments without a red bib on his back.

LSU brings pressure, Klubnik not able to follow through with his arm and the ball sails high. pic.twitter.com/iFSIIAUleb — Blaine Grisak 💭 (@BGMediaOnSI) August 31, 2025 The NFL does not give quarterbacks unlimited time to develop those traits. It eats quarterbacks alive. Look up Kyle Allen from Texas A&M on google, dead similar profile to Klubnik, failed because he couldn't handle heavy pressure defenses. Klubnik has the physical ability to make NFL throws. He does not yet have the mental consistency that makes those throws matter. At Clemson, Klubnik finished with 10,132 passing yards, 73 touchdown passes, and 24 interceptions. His 2024 season was excellent by any standard: 3,639 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, six interceptions, and seven rushing scores. He led Clemson to an ACC championship and earned MVP honors after throwing four touchdowns against SMU. That season created an expectation Klubnik could not sustain.

We are 48 days away from Clemson’s opener against LSU: Clemson capped off its sixth win in a row with a Klubnik TD throw to TJ Moore, taking down Virginia 48-25. pic.twitter.com/CSFTYXcSpu — Grayson Mann (@gray_mann21) July 13, 2025 In 2025, Clemson went 7-6, Clemson's worst record in more than a decade, and Klubnik’s production fell off a cliff to 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. He completed 65.6 percent of his passes, but the offense became less explosive and he looked less comfortable when games became chaotic. His final season did not resemble the future first-round quarterback many expected after 2024. That matters because Klubnik’s biggest problem has never been making one impressive throw. It has been stringing together correct decisions when the defense takes away his first read. His college film showed a quarterback who could hold the ball too long, drift into pressure and struggle to consistently identify the right answer after the snap. He has the athleticism to escape mistakes, but the NFL is filled with quarterbacks who can make spectacular plays in practice. The ones who survive are the quarterbacks who process quickly enough to avoid needing spectacular plays every drive. That is why the Brock Purdy comparison feels like people being too nice. Purdy was not successful simply because he had a strong arm or played in a creative offense. He developed elite anticipation, quick processing, pocket movement, and timing. He routinely throws receivers open before they finish their routes, understands where pressure is coming from, and keeps the offense on schedule. His poise and accuracy allow him to win without constantly relying on arm strength or improvisation.

What makes #49ers Brock Purdy so good? 1: Exceptional Accuracy & Ball Placement. 2: Elite Anticipation. 3: Poise & Pocket Presence. 4: High Efficiency. 5: Athleticism & Off Script Ability. 6: Leadership & Intangibles. 7: Quick Processing. #FTTBpic.twitter.com/KPxXhVvGKr — Stephen (@State0Jefferson) July 22, 2026 Klubnik has not shown those traits consistently enough. At 22, there is no guarantee they will suddenly arrive. A more realistic ceiling is current Arizona Cardinals backup QB Gardner Minshew. Minshew carved out a legitimate NFL career because he was decisive, accurate in the short and intermediate areas, comfortable working through reads, and mentally resilient after mistakes. He was never viewed as a franchise quarterback, but he understood how to operate an offense and earned opportunities across multiple teams. Klubnik could potentially reach that level, but even that projection requires significant development. He would need to become faster after the snap, more disciplined from the pocket, and more reliable on third down and in late-game situations. Klubnik has had big moments at Clemson, including two ACC Championship Game MVP performances. But when the expectations became overwhelming, he did not consistently play like the quarterback projected to be among the best in the country. His 2025 season exposed how difficult it was for him to maintain confidence and command when Clemson needed him to take control. The Jets may love what they see in practice, but practice is the safest environment for Klubnik to look comfortable. There is no full-speed pass rush, no game clock, no consequence attached to taking a sack, and no national expectation riding on one decision. The jersey on Klubnik's back still has a red bib over it. THAT'S IMPORTANT. Once those new variables arrive, the question becomes whether Klubnik can trust his eyes and make the right decision before the play collapses. I don't think he can.

The 2025 New York Jets were the first NFL team to not record an interception since 1933. In response, the Jets traded up to take Cade Klubnik. If Klubnik does not show meaningful progress early, he will be replaced by another young quarterback, a veteran free agent, or the next draft pick. Fourth-round quarterbacks are given opportunities, but they are rarely given unlimited patience.
