Sunderland return to the Stadium of Light for the first time since that historic afternoon on the final day of the Premier League campaign, when the Black Cats qualified for the Europa League.

This is the Lads’ final pre-season fixture, which is against French side Stade Rennais.

Rennes in profile – tactics and talking points

Under manager Franck Haise, Stade Rennais dictate matches using a highly structured, fluid and vertical possession-based game. Whilst he’s adjusted his typical 3-4-3 shape to a balanced 4-3-3 at Rennes to maintain defensive consistency, his core principles on the ball remain fiercely progressive.

The team’s patterns of play in possession follow three key phases:

Controlled build-up from the back

During the initial build-up phase, the goalkeeper and centre-backs are heavily involved, inviting the opponent to press and maintaining composure under pressure to create numerical superiorities.

A deep-lying midfielder drops heavily into the first phase of play to create a 3+1 structure. This frees up the remaining central midfielders to push higher up the pitch into spaces between the lines.

Rapid and vertical transitions

Rather than keeping possession for the sake of it, Haise’s system prioritises intentional, quick vertical passes.

As soon as a passing lane opens, the ball is driven forward via short, sharp central combinations or direct switches to players running into space, the goal being to catch the opposition before they can organise their defensive shape.

Overloads and positional rotations

Rennes heavily utilise the full width of the pitch, overloading wide areas by creating triangles between the advancing full-back, a central midfielder and the winger. These three positions rotate fluidly.

A winger might make a sharp diagonal run inside to pin the centre-backs while a midfielder drifts wide to cross, pulling the opponent’s defensive block completely out of position. Midfielders like Mahdi Camara are given tactical freedom to venture deep into the final third, effectively turning possession phases into heavily manned attacking overloads.

Les Rouge et Noir play with an intense, highly disciplined and aggressively compact mid-to-high press off the ball, and true to his core philosophy of controlling space rather than possession, Haise sets up the team to deny opponents any breathing room through the centre of the pitch.

The defensive approach

When Rennes don’t have the ball, their defensive structure focuses on specific tactical phases.

Aggressive high pressing and triggers

Rennes implement a modern, intense 4-3-3 press where forwards and central midfielders mark opponents closely.

They don’t press haphazardly; instead, they wait for distinct ‘triggers’, such as a heavy touch, a backwards pass or a ball played to a technically weaker defender.

The front three stays narrow to block central passing lanes through the middle. This baiting mechanism forces the opposition to play the ball out to the flanks. Once the ball goes wide, the full-back and winger aggressively trap the ball-carrier against the touchline.

A compact defensive block

If the initial high press is bypassed, they quickly drop into a tight mid-block.

The midfield trio – anchored by defensive presence Valentin Rongier – squeezes the space between the defensive line and the attack, ensuring opponents can’t find their playmakers between the lines.

The centre-backs, led by physical and intelligent young defenders like Abdelhamid Aït Boudlal, hold a relatively high defensive line and are instructed to squeeze the pitch to keep the team vertically compact, meaning the distance between the striker and the last defender is minimal.

Immediate counter-pressing

The moment Rennes lose the ball in the attacking third, the closest players immediately swarm the opponent with the goal of forcing a rushed clearance or winning the ball back within seconds while the opponent is still structurally disorganised.

If the initial counter-press fails, a designated holding midfielder stays back to absorb the counter-attack, providing a crucial safety net while the rest of the team sprints back into their defensive shape.

Tale of the tape

Rennes are potential Europa League opponents for Sunderland, qualifying for the competition after finishing sixth in the 2025/2026 Ligue 1 campaign.

They are four-time winners of the French second division, three-time winners of the Coupe de France, and the winners of the 1972 Trophée des Champions.

Eliezer Mayenda transferred to our opponents in July. ‘The Big Man’ will receive a warm reception as he returns to the Stadium of Light; hopefully, this won’t be the last we see of our play-off hero, and we can see him shine on the European stage..

The match will be streamed live on SAFC Live at 15:00 BST, and spectators will be watching live at the Stadium of Light.
