The season is just around the corner, and the Oregon Ducks are still missing a key part of their freshman class. Unfortunately, they might not get that missing piece back any time soon. On Monday, defensive line coach Tony Tuioti noted that freshman Tony Cumberland still has "a ways to go" in his recovery from a car accident in the spring. The accident left Cumberland with injuries that forced him to miss the spring season, and he still hasn't returned to the field less than a month away from Oregon's first game. "It's a work in progress with him," Tuioti said. "I don't think it's going to be anything that we'll be able to see him soon. But he's made so much progress. I think the thing that's most important is that we have him with us, and just having him in the room brings a smile to all our faces." Cumberland was the top recruit in Oregon in the 2026 recruiting class after transferring and spending his last two seasons in high school at Willamette High School. As a senior, the 6-foot-5 defensive lineman racked up 102 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 14 sacks and a pair of deflections. He was also rated as a top 100 recruit in the country, per 247 Sports. The Ducks could use Cumberland along the interior as more young depth at the position. With Cumberland on the sideline, the Ducks have turned to fellow freshman Anthony "Tank" Jones Jr., who has gained more than 50 pounds since arriving on campus and reaching 300 pounds, according to Tuioti, signaling a potential move to the interior. Even while Cumberland is operating as a spectator, he still brings a light presence to the veteran defensive line room during a trying time in fall camp, when roles are won and lost. "When our guys think about camp and camp is really, really hard, all they gotta do is just look at Tony Cumberland," Tuioti said. "And just know that, ‘Hey man, I'm all right, and I'm gonna work really, really hard for him because I want to make him proud.’ If he had the opportunity to practice, he'd definitely do it too. So, just love him. Just love the progress that he's made so far, and just really glad he's here with us.” There is no clear timeline for Cumberland to return to practice, if at all, this season. Given all the practice time he is likely to miss, this is shaping up to be a year of recovery, learning and growth for the Oregon freshman in a complicated Ducks' defense.
