The San Diego Padres have been lauded for their play over their six-game winning streak that spanned three series, but that came to an end with what may have arguably been their worst loss of the season. The Padres were held to just one hit, which came on a Jake Croenworth single in the first inning, and committed two errors on one series of plays that contributed to a 6-1 loss to the Guardians at Progressive Field on Saturday.

San Diego beat the best Cleveland had to offer in the series opener when they got to the Guardians ace Gavin Williams. The Padres were so affective that they knocked him out of the game after just four-plus innings of work and it proved to be the worst start of his season. San Diego went on to win the game 7-5 and expected to have similar success and a similar result in the second game of the series against Joey Cantillo.

The Padres did not have any success against Castillo or any other Guardians pitcher for that matter. The former San Diego farmhand controlled the lineup and limited damage that was caused by walks and cruised through six innings. Cantillo allowed one run on one hit with three walks and seven strikeouts. He used his curveball to keep the Padres off balance and was only hurt by one of two walks he issued to Fernando Tatis Jr. That damage came in the first inning when Tatis walked to leadoff the game and was followed by Cronenworth with a single to put runners at the corners with no outs. Cantillo then got Manny Machado to ground into a double play, which allowed Tatis to score to put San Diego up 1-0 with two outs. Cantillo finished off the inning with a strikeout of Ty France and never looked back.

San Diego sent Wandy Peralta to the mound to start the game ands he allowed a run on three hits with a strikeout and Cleveland tied the game, 1-1. Kyle Hart followed Peralta and he also allowed a run on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts. The Guardians enjoyed a 2-1 lead after the second inning, Randy Vasquez who many thought would get the start in the game, came on in long relief and worked five innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Vasquez was not helped by his defense, which allowed two runs to score in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks to two errors by Cronenworth on one play which capped the scoring in the game and left the Padres trailing the Guardians, 6-1. Griffin Canning worked one inning and did not allow a hit while recording one strikeout.

It was an ugly game for San Diego. The offense was bad. The pitching was bad and the defense was uncharacteristically bad. The Padres must flush the result and get back on track with a series win today. San Diego and Cleveland play the rubber match of the series today at 10:40 a.m.
