In Foxborough, the hours leading up to the preseason opener brought a backfield shakeup.

The New England Patriots placed running back Terrell Jennings on injured reserve Thursday, officially ending his campaign before the 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff at Gillette Stadium against the Indianapolis Colts.

The move follows the midweek workouts and additions of running backs Hassan Haskins and JaMycal Hasty. And it shifts the No. 3 spot on the depth chart behind incumbents Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson, with sophomore Lan Larison and rookie Jam Miller also in the battle for a place on the 53-man roster.

That was where a former undrafted arrival out of Florida A&M had spent parts of the past two regular seasons.

Jennings, 25, originally signed with the Patriots after attending rookie minicamp on a tryout basis back in 2024. The 6-foot, 222-pounder has since made 10 appearances for the organization. He rose from the practice squad to the active roster over the course of his rookie year. And in 2025, after reaching the league limit in standard elevations, he returned to the 53.

Rushing for his first NFL touchdown last fall, Jennings stands with 115 scrimmage yards through 37 touches as a Patriot. Also having a hand in three tackles and two kickoff returns, his career has spanned 79 snaps on offense and 69 snaps on special teams. He had finished the team’s run to Super Bowl LX on injured reserve after his 21-day practice window expired in February.

In additional backfield movement, rookie rusher Myles Montgomery reverted to New England’s injured reserve on Thursday, according to the league’s transaction wire.

Montgomery, 23, had been waived with an injury designation the afternoon prior and went unclaimed. The 5-foot-10, 205-pound undrafted free agent agreed to terms signed with the club in May. Spending three years at Cincinnati before transferring to Central Florida for his final two years of eligibility, the former Knights captain appeared in 41 collegiate games. In all, he finished with 1,546 yards and 11 touchdowns across 274 rushing attempts.

Five Patriots now reside on injured reserve. The latest arrivals trail tight end Julian Hill as well as wide receivers Jimmy Kibble and Jeremiah Webb.
