ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum just poured cold water on the defending champions. The veteran analyst appeared on First Take and delivered a blunt message to Indiana. Finebaum hit the brakes on the Hoosiers' chances to repeat as national champions this year. He acknowledged their recent success but drew a hard line. "Slow down a little bit. … You had your day, you'll have some fun, but you're not winning the National Championship this year," Finebaum said. Indiana Hoosiers Face Tougher Path According to Finebaum

He expanded on the point with a direct address to fans. "I understand Indiana graduates all over the country are starting to sound like Ohio State graduates, Alabama graduates and Notre Dame graduates, but slow down a little bit IU… you had your day, you'll have some fun, but you're not winning the National Championship this year." Finebaum pointed to a more difficult schedule ahead. He highlighted late-season tests against Nebraska, Ohio State and Michigan. "You might say Nebraska is terrible, no they're not. Matt Rhule has done a good job bringing that program back. They have Ohio State and then they go to Michigan. That, to me, is a 3-game gauntlet that they didn't have to deal with last year," he explained.

Indiana Hoosiers Still Projected for Playoff by Finebaum

Despite the title skepticism, Finebaum still believes Indiana will reach the College Football Playoff. He simply does not see another championship run. The Hoosiers enter the season as defending national champions after their historic 2025 campaign under Curt Cignetti. That title capped a dramatic program turnaround. Picking the college football title contenders is always a hot topic heading into the year. Finebaum's comments will likely generate strong reactions from Indiana fans. The analyst has been wrong on the Hoosiers before. He previously questioned Cignetti's long-term status only for Indiana to win it all. Fans will watch closely to see if Finebaum's latest prediction holds. Indiana will be without Fernando Mendoza, who became the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL draft after leading the Hoosiers to their first national championship at the turn of the year.
