Injuries can derail the season for even the most promising of Super Bowl contenders. And although the Carolina Panthers were never that to begin with here in 2026, they ve been hammered.

Injuries can derail the season for even the most promising of Super Bowl contenders. And although the Carolina Panthers were never that to begin with here in 2026, they've been hammered by injuries at training camp thus far—putting a bit of a damper on our expectations for the upcoming season.

What hurts most about the string of bad injury news is that it's hit every premium position. At the moment, their two starting offensive tackles are out indefinitely, they've lost their second-best edge rusher for the year and a key piece at wide receiver and, heck, even their third-string quarterback has been sidelined after an exciting Hall of Fame Game performance.

But while the starting lineup looks a little different now, these losses can afford new opportunities for guys further down the depth chart. One of them may be free-agent pickup John Metchie III, who had a strong preseason debut.

In their 2026 preview of the Panthers, Pro Football Focus has identified Metchie as a contender for the No. 3 spot that is supposed to go to either Xavier Legette or David Moore. Analyst Gordon McGuinness writes:

Through two NFL seasons, Legette has been outproduced by Jalen Coker, who went undrafted in the same class, and [Chris] Brazzell was set to provide another challenger for playing time. An early training camp injury is expected to cost Brazzell his rookie season, however, shifting the focus to whether John Metchie can push Legette for a starting role. Metchie has shown occasional flashes through his first three NFL seasons, but his career average of 1.03 yards per route run suggests he presents a less significant threat to Legette's role than Brazzell might have.

If Legette looks like a completely different player at camp and can prove it during the preseason, then we'd have no objection to him starting the year in the WR3 role. It would be a mistake to gift that spot to Moore, no matter how great of a practice player he supposedly may be.

Metchie, despite just joining the team in the spring, already has a history (and a pretty good one, at that) with starting quarterback Bryce Young. At the University of Alabama in 2021, during Young's Heisman Trophy-winning campaign, Metchie posted 96 catches for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns.

This may end up as the most intriguing battle for the Panthers over the last few weeks of the preseason, especially if dark horse emerges.
