The Philadelphia Phillies have cycled through some considerable pitching depth this season, consistently calling up and demoting arms as they search for a bullpen mix that works.

But one recent move stands out because it represented both an ending and a new beginning for a veteran pitcher who was looking for his final opportunity with the team.

Colin Peluse joined the Phillies organization after spending the first six seasons of his professional career in the Oakland Athletics’ system. The right-hander entered 2026 hoping to continue his progression toward a long-awaited major league opportunity, but his season ultimately took a different turn.

Peluse spent most of the year at Double-A Reading and never reached the majors. Now, his time as a professional player has come to an end, although he will remain with the organization in a different capacity.

Philadelphia Phillies Pitcher Ends Playing Days, Begins Coaching Career After Release

The Phillies hired Peluse as a pitching coach in their player-development system right after releasing him from his player contract.

“Colin Peluse, a pitcher who spent this season at Double-A Reading, has been released from his player contract and hired by the Phillies as a pitching coach in their player-development system,” according to Phillies Nation’s Ty Daubert.

The unusual transition effectively ends his playing career while allowing Philadelphia to retain someone with years of professional pitching experience.

The Phillies signed Peluse to a minor-league contract in November 2025 after he spent the first six years of his professional career in Oakland’s system. Rather than continuing to pursue his own major league breakthrough, he will now help develop the next wave of Phillies pitchers as the team looks to reestablish its farm system following several years of depleting trades.

Philadelphia Phillies’ Veteran Moves To New Role With Organization After Release

Peluse’s professional career began with considerable promise. Selected by Oakland in the ninth round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Wake Forest, the 6-foot-3 right-hander built a solid track record as both a starter and reliever but never made his big-league debut.

That experience could make him an intriguing addition to Philadelphia’s development staff. Having worked through the demands of both starting and relief roles, Peluse can now bring the perspective of a player who spent years attempting to reach the highest level of the sport.

His transition also represents a notable departure from the normal path for a player of his age. Instead of continuing to chase an opportunity elsewhere after being released, Peluse has immediately accepted a coaching position with the organization that employed him as a player.
