The Phillies settle into one of baseball’s most charming settings, which came from a fictional story and its iconic 1989 movie, aiming to reap tangible rewards as the decisive final stretch of the season looms. Certainly, the Phillies (64-48) and Twins (60-62) will revel in their surroundings amidst the cornfields of Dyersville, Iowa, on Thursday night, while trying to author endings as happy as those in the "Field of Dreams" film. “This is a game you don't really forget,” Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly told the media before the game.
The third Field of Dreams game, and first since 2022, starts at 7:30 p.m. and is being streamed live on Netflix. Players engaged in pregame drills with a stirring backdrop of cornstalks beyond an outfield fence that appeared to have wooden beams. Likewise, the scoreboard also had a wooden appearance. Some also played catch with their fathers, an ode to the film’s theme of star character Ray Kinsella, played by Kevin Costner, reconciling with his father in such a manner. Mattingly did so with 14-year-old son Louie. Older son Preston is the Phillies' general manager.
“It’s just really cool to be able to be part of it and be here and enjoy it,” Bryce Harper said before the game. The Phillies’ post-All-Star Break struggles have dropped them 9½ games behind the first-place Braves in the National League East. But they are presently tied for the third and final NL wild-card playoff spot with Arizona. Likewise, the Twins are one-half game behind Detroit and Texas, which are tied for the final American League wild-card berth. “It's still a game,” Phillies third baseman Bryson Stott said before the game, “and we know we have to win games, especially now and coming down the stretch.” Each team is wearing throwback uniforms in somewhat of a salute to history. The Phillies’ road gray outfits resemble those worn by the 1939-41 clubs. The Twins will don uniforms resembling those worn in their 1961 debut season after the franchise relocated from Washington.
