Football is just around the corner.
Florida State’s week zero matchup against New Mexico State is 12 days away after Monday’s practice, and head coach Mike Norvell and his staff are beginning to finalize the plans for which players will be in line for the largest roles come August 29th.
Last Saturday was what FSU described as a “competition day” — another metric to determine preseason camp battles. Today, Norvell told the local Tallahassee media that the Seminoles focused mostly on special teams and also worked on situational football, where the offense continues to impress.
“We got a two-minute drill (today). I thought the offense has embraced that time and understanding. It’s a great opportunity for us as a coaching staff to be able to work together…I thought we got some really good work in that era throughout the last week.”
Part of the reason for the Nole offense’s success in situational football could be the health of WR Jayvan Boggs. Boggs set high school records on fire in his senior year at Cocoa High and came into Tallahassee in 2025 with high expectations. Injuries derailed his freshman year, and he began fall camp not 100%, according to Norvell. However, the head coach highlighted Boggs after practice and his work to get himself back on the field.
“Getting Boggs back in the fold (has helped our versatility). He is a very versatile player. He’s got great speed and is a guy who can really do it all.”
On the defensive side, Norvell shouted out linebacker coach Ernie Sims for his efforts with that position group. The former FSU legend is in his first year as LB coach in Tallahassee, but he seems to have his fingerprints all over the room’s DNA and mentality. Sims talks to the local media tomorrow after practice.
“The daily approach and edge that he brings with those guys is something I’ve really liked to see. He’s challenged them mentally and physically. There is so much competition in that room; it kind of feeds off each other. But I think he’s done a really nice job making everyone in that room his.”
With the Seminoles are less than two weeks away from their season opener, for the first time, they began practice preparation for NMSU today.
“We got our first introduction, about 15 minutes, of working against and looking at New Mexico State with some of the things we could potentially see.”
Florida State will practice for four consecutive days beginning on Monday. The full media availability of head coach Mike Norvell and wide receiver Jasen Lopez can be found below.
