Australia's batting collapsed on the opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh at Marrara Stadium in Darwin on August 13, 2026. Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bat, but the decision backfired as the hosts were dismissed for 198.

Steve Smith top-scored with 71, while the remainder of the batting order struggled significantly, with only one other batter reaching 25. Bangladesh's Hasan Mahmud claimed his best Test figures of 6 for 55 to dismantle the Australian innings. By stumps, Bangladesh had reached 96 for 1, trailing by 102 runs.

Ricky Ponting, who headlines Seven's commentary team for the Darwin Test, was critical of both the selection approach and the batting performance. The former Australian captain expressed frustration with the selectors' decision to maintain an experienced squad rather than introduce younger players ahead of a demanding period.

Australia face 21 Tests over the next 12 months, including a tour of South Africa for the first time since 2018, four Tests against New Zealand at home, and a five-Test series in India, before the Ashes.

"This has been a very, very successful cricket team. [But] right now there are a couple of chinks in the armour and the selectors decided to stick with what they know. At the end of last season, I thought the time was right now to blood a couple of youngsters into these two Test matches." Ponting was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Why selectors chose experience over youth

Cameron Green, at 27 years old, remained the only squad member younger than 31, highlighting the age profile of the selected group. Ponting had previously identified Campbell Kellaway and Ollie Peake as the younger players who should have been included in the Darwin and Mackay fixtures.

"At the end of last year, I said Kellaway and Peake were the ones that I wanted to have," Ponting continued.

Ponting's concerns about timing debuts and recurring batting mistakes

Ponting also expressed surprise at Cummins' decision to bat first on a pitch that would prove challenging for batting. The former captain identified specific technical failings in the batting display that extended beyond the conditions.

"We were all surprised," Ponting said.

"What I've seen today is just the same mistakes being made again, particularly by some of our top-order players. Almost sometimes an over-intent to try to score [from] the balls that aren't quite there, hence Weatherald's dismissal," he concluded.

These recurring patterns of dismissal pointed to a lack of discipline and shot selection rather than pitch conditions alone determining the outcome.
