Quentin Johnston injury update: Chargers WR 'totally fine' After scare

Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston appears to have avoided a serious injury. Johnston, who limped off the field during Tuesday's joint practice against the49ers, appears to be just fine. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Johnston is not expected to miss much time, if any, after exiting practice with a lower body injury. The 24-year-old did not finish the practice session; however, he may be available for the team's next practice, which won't be until this weekend after their Thursday night game against the 49ers. Johnston is heading into his fourth year in the league. He is set to enter the final year of his four-year rookie deal, and it will be his biggest season yet. Availability, or lack thereof, is far from the issue with Johnston, as he's missed only five of a potential 51 games played in his first three seasons in the league. Johnston's first three seasons in the NFL have been a struggle. The former first-round pick has yet to live up to expectations, dealing with inconsistent pass-catching and difficulties creating separation against tight coverage. It seems that if it's not one issue, it's another for Johnston. In Mike McDaniel's offense, Johnston has the chance to thrive in quick hitters, screens, and crossers designed for him to create yards after the catch. The former TCU Horned Frog is entering a make-or-break season. In his first three seasons, Johnston has been available but unproductive. In 46 games, he's recorded 144 receptions for 1,877 yards, 18 touchdowns, and averages 13 yards per reception. Johnston has a catch percentage of 59.5% and averages 40.8 yards per game. Those numbers don't scream WR1; however, that could all change with McDaniel calling the shots. If Johnston can't break out this season, his future with the team will certainly be at risk. Johnston will enter the 2026 season in the final year of his four-year, $14 million rookie contract.
