To the pleasant surprise of many Dallas Cowboys fans, the franchise just managed to quietly lock in a foundational piece for years to come without the troublesome and usual burden of any sort of drama or antics..

To the pleasant surprise of many Dallas Cowboys fans, the franchise just managed to quietly lock in a foundational piece for years to come without the troublesome and usual burden of any sort of drama or antics. The Cowboys agreed to a three-year, $105.9 million extension with star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams earlier this week, inking their anchor to the second-richest defensive interior contract in NFL history. Clean, quiet and a boatload of cash. That's how these kinds of negotiations should go. But Dallas' decision to course-correct its contract methods of the past and lock Williams in as its defensive leader for the next five years aren't the only perks of this development. With the extension came some cap relief, and courtesy of Spotrac, we've got the confirmed figure now.  The structure of Williams' new deal frees up $13 million in 2026 cap space and another $11 million in 2027. His cap hit drops to just $8.5 million this season before gradually climbing to $14.4 million in 2027, $19.9 million in 2028, $24.9 million in 2029 and $30.8 million in 2030. READ MORE: 'Dynasty!' Cowboys Named Most Valuable NFL Franchise; Critics Miss The Point In simpler terms ... Dallas managed to secure Williams for five more seasons while actually generating $24 million in additional cap flexibility over the next two years. The bill doesn't disappear — four void years help push money into the future, including a currently scheduled $54.3 million void-year cap charge in 2031 — but the structure gives the Cowboys considerably more room to operate in the short term. So ... it's time to go shopping, right? Maxx Crosby or Jordyn Brooks or Josh Sweat ... Here we come? Not quite, yet.  Let's use Crosby as the case study here, since he's the biggest name who cannot seem to stop being linked to the Cowboys and is a player Dallas has already pursued three separate times before. For hypothetical sake — let's say the Las Vegas Raiders make it known that they're willing to deal Crosby again and that Jerry Jones comes back to the negotiation table. These trade talks would be more complicated than simply agreeing on a compensation package. READ MORE: Cowboys Vs. Packers 'Spin': Who Won The Micah Parsons Trade? While the room created by Williams' extension is extremely beneficial, it wouldn't cover Crosby's entire financial cost. So Dallas could make additional space of its own by restructuring other contracts and pushing money into future seasons, a mechanism NFL teams routinely use to lower immediate cap charges. Or .... The Raiders could lend a hand.  Crosby is currently due a $30 million base salary in 2026. Las Vegas could theoretically convert a portion of that salary into a bonus before trading him, paying that money itself and leaving Dallas responsible for a smaller remaining salary after the deal. Under NFL cap rules, bonus money already paid by the trading team remains on that team's cap rather than following the player to his new club. Of course, the Raiders taking on additional financial and cap pain to make Crosby cheaper for Dallas probably wouldn't come free. The Cowboys could theoretically have to compensate Las Vegas with additional trade value for its willingness to absorb more of the cost. But that's kind of the point. There isn't only one way for Dallas to make the money work, just like there isn't only one player the Cowboys could go after with the newly produced cap leeway. (Dallas could create a whole new extension for the DFW native Crosby, allowing a neat fit inside the cap.) Sure, Crosby is a trade option. Same with Arizona pass-rusher Sweat. Same with Miami linebacker Brooks (and Dallas' interest there is as real as its interest in Maxx). Linebacker Bobby Wagner looms as a free-agent option, too. Is Jerry prepping to explore these avenues ... again!?  Dallas could rely on multiple avenues to make this $24 million pot over two years even bigger. Use your imagination, Cowboys Nation, and be sure your shopping bags are ready.
