It was the work Caleb Rogers put in as a rookie last season, replacing the injured Jackson Powers-Johnson that has had him battling for the team's starting right guard spot. And he is looking at another opportunity to seize upon. Rogers had been seeing what looked to be about a quarter of the team's first team reps through camp so far, with JPJ getting the other 75%. But as of Tuesday's joint practice, Rogers got 100% of those reps because JPJ was sidelined with an undisclosed injury. What kind of impression Rogers made on the Raiders coaches Tuesday remains to be seen. But overall, head coach Klint Kubiak was not satisfied with the play of the offensive line. "I think we can get better. I didn't feel like we had a great day running the ball," Kubiak said. "Our offensive line has done a great job of jelling to this point. We all know that we're not anywhere near where we want to be and we've got to keep getting better." Kubiak also noted that JPJ will not play in the preseason game against the Texans on Thursday, offering another opportunity for good reps for Rogers. You'd have to figure if he steps up and plays well, he has a chance to move ahead in that battle. No one wants injuries to happen. But it is often a factor in players winning jobs. A couple years ago, that's how then rookie DJ Glaze won the right tackle job. Incumbent starter Thayer Munford got injured in camp and Glaze stepped up and held his own and ultimately won the job. The best ability is availability and once that door is opened, it can be hard to close it. It will be up to Rogers if he is able to walk through that door because JPJ isn't expected to be down long. He will either return to get his job back or watch as the team goes with the hot hand.
