Heavy rain forced the match officials to call for an early Lunch on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test between India and Sri Lanka at Galle International Stadium on Sunday, August 16. The second session has been scheduled to begin at 12:20 PM IST, subject to conditions improving at the ground.

The disruption compounded an already weather-affected contest. Play on Day 2 had originally been brought forward by 15 minutes to compensate for overs lost to inclement weather on the opening day, making the fresh rain all the more damaging to the match schedule.

Early Lunch taken at Galle!

The second session is scheduled to begin at 12.20 PM (Local Time and IST), if weather permits.

The Indian team remains well placed despite the interruptions, having closed Day 1 at 288 for 2. Devdutt Padikkal is unbeaten on 131 and Rishabh Pant is unbeaten on 27, and the duo will be heading out to carry the innings forward once live action resumes.

How did India's batting unfold on Day 1 at Galle?

Yashasvi Jaiswal had an excellent start and looked set to make a big score before a mix-up with opening partner KL Rahul ended his stay at the crease courtesy of a run out at the striker's end. Rahul, meanwhile, batted positively and contributed 77 before he was forced to retire hurt with forearm cramps, a setback that denied India the chance to push even further ahead on the day. Skipper Shubman Gill fell to a rash shot after scoring 16.

Through all those setbacks, Padikkal held the innings together with an unbeaten century. His 131 not out anchored the batting effort and ensured India closed the day in a position of clear advantage over the hosts.

What is at stake with further rain at Galle?

The 1st Test between India and Sri Lanka is scheduled to run till August 19 at the Galle International Stadium. With two full days already affected by weather, any additional rain on Day 2 would further reduce the time available for both sides to complete their innings across the remaining days of the match.

India's overnight position of 288 for 2, with two set batters at the crease, gives them the platform to post a substantial first-innings total once play resumes. However, every over lost to rain tightens the window for a result, particularly given that Galle pitches traditionally assist spin as the match progresses.

Officials had already factored in an early start on Day 2 to recover lost time from the first day, underlining how disruptive the continued rain has been to the match's rhythm. The resumption at 12:20 PM IST remained contingent on the weather clearing at the ground.
