If a recent report from Sky Sports (as quoted by The Daily Record) is believed to be true, Rangers have revived their interest in Ryan Oné and are currently engaged in talks with Sheffield United about bringing the young centre-forward back to his homeland. The story has developed following Youssef Chermiti’s injury against Hibernian, as their star striker could potentially miss the remainder of the season after rupturing his ACL on Sunday evening.

The 20-year-old Scotland youth international progressed through Hamilton Academical’s academy ranks before breaking into their first-team squad back in the 2022-23 campaign. Soon, he grabbed a regular role, earning 36 senior appearances across the Scottish Championship and League One.

His promise and potential caught the attention of the Blades’ scouts. Sheffield United, then competing in the Premier League, secured his services in the summer of 2023. Despite making his debut in October against Arsenal, the youngster primarily featured for their reserves throughout the 2023-24 season.

Oné was involved in the Championship upon United’s relegation, but the lack of gametime prompted them to sanction a loan to third-tier outfit Lincoln City earlier this year. There, he flourished with more minutes, scoring 5 goals and assisting 1 in 16 league outings [stats via Transfermarket].

Why Rangers Must Bring Him In To Restore Depth And Quality High Up The Pitch

Meanwhile, Sheffield United have rejected the Gers’ initial loan-to-buy offer for their prized asset. But the Glasgow giants have not given up on the chase, as they must be desperate to restore parity high up the pitch in the wake of Chermiti’s absence. Derek McInnes prefers a physical front pairing in his trademark 4-4-2 system, and he should not rely only on Lawrence Shankland, Ryan Naderi and Bojan Miovski, with games arriving thick and fast, given their engagement in four competitions.

Shankland has yet to hit the ground running after last season’s blistering stint under McInnes at Hearts. Naderi has been a willing runner with immense work rate and energy; however, the young German is struggling to convert his intensity into consistency while spearheading the attack. Miovski has demonstrated his poaching traits on a few occasions. But the Macedonian must settle for a bit-part role if retained beyond this month.

Oné, hailed for his physical attributes and mobility in and around the box, would stretch defences, keeping the defenders on their toes. He scored some crucial goals during his time in League One, and a spell at Rangers could see him develop the week-to-week sharpness before locking down a permanent starting spot.
