The BCCI's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on a Tamil Nadu all-rounder who made his Ranji Trophy debut last season, after recovering an undeclared mobile phone from him inside the Player and Match Officials Area (PMOA) during the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2026. The player has also been barred from the remainder of the tournament.

The breach was detected on August 10 at NPR College ground in Natham, Dindigul. ACSU officials described the act as a gross violation of the code of conduct for players. Following the discovery, the player was confronted but could not explain. The unit then served him a formal notice and asked for a written reply. According to the ACSU, the reply was found unsatisfactory, after which the Rs 1 lakh penalty was confirmed as the sanction for a first instance of violating the anti-corruption code.

What action did the TNCA take after receiving the ACSU's findings?

Crucially, an examination of the recovered handset revealed no activity directly linked to contact with bookmakers. Despite this, the possession of an undeclared device inside a restricted area was treated as a serious procedural violation.

The player was immediately withdrawn from his franchise once the matter came to light, and all other TNPL franchises were subsequently informed of his withdrawal.

"We have received a letter (from the ACSU) about this incident," the source was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

Rao also confirmed the directive issued to franchise owners:

"We have instructed the team owners not to consider him for selection until the enquiry is over. We are currently investigating the matter and will take appropriate action," the source added.

This instruction effectively extends the player's unavailability across every TNPL franchise for the duration of the investigation.

What is the current procedural status of the case?

The ACSU has formally communicated its findings and the Rs 1 lakh fine recommendation to the TNCA. The association's own inquiry, for which the player appeared on August 14, represents the next confirmed step in the process. The TNCA has stated it will announce its decision once the investigation is complete.

"The player was confronted first but he could not explain the violation. He was served notice and asked to reply, which he did. His reply too was found unsatisfactory and thus a fine of Rs 1 lakh was imposed on him" the source concluded.

TNPL 2026 is the 10th edition of the tournament, running from August 4 to August 28, 2026. The league stage in Dindigul was scheduled to conclude on August 15, after which the competition moves to Chennai. With the player barred from selection for the remainder of the event, he will miss all remaining TNPL 2026 fixtures irrespective of the inquiry's outcome.
