Ravindra Jadeja became only the third left-arm spinner in Test history to claim 350 wickets when he dismissed Sri Lanka's Keshara Nuwantha during the first Test at Galle International Stadium on August 17, 2026. The milestone placed Jadeja alongside Rangana Herath, who leads all left-arm spinners with 433 wickets, and Daniel Vettori, who sits second on the list with 362 wickets.

Jadeja had entered the Sri Lanka tour needing just two wickets to reach the landmark. He arrived at Galle having played 89 Tests, taken 348 wickets at an average of 25.12 and accumulated 4,095 Test runs. The first Test between Sri Lanka and India began on August 15, 2026, at the same venue, giving Jadeja the opportunity to complete the milestone on Sri Lankan soil.

The achievement also underlines his standing as a genuine Test all-rounder. Jadeja is now only the second Indian cricketer after Kapil Dev to combine 350 or more Test wickets with 4,000 or more Test runs, and he is the first Indian spinner to reach that all-round double.

How does Jadeja's record compare with other left-arm spinners in Tests?

Among left-arm spinners in Test cricket, Herath's tally of 433 wickets remains the benchmark. The Sri Lankan great retired as the most prolific left-arm spinner the game has seen, and his record has stood since 2018. Vettori's 362 wickets placed him second before Jadeja's arrival at 350. The New Zealand captain was a dominant force across two decades of Test cricket, and his tally long appeared beyond reach for any left-arm spinner of the modern era.

Jadeja's entry into this group at third place is a significant marker of his consistency. His bowling average of 25.12 across 89 Tests reflects sustained wicket-taking across a variety of conditions and continents. He has also recorded 15 five-wicket innings returns in Test cricket, with a best match performance of 10 wickets for 154 runs. Derek Underwood, the England left-arm spinner, claimed 297 wickets and sits fourth on the all-time list, while Bangladesh's Taijul Islam has taken 271 Test wickets and occupies fifth place among left-arm spinners.

Jadeja's record against Sri Lanka specifically reinforces why Galle was a fitting stage for the milestone. He has claimed 33 wickets at an average of 23.73 across seven Tests against them, making Sri Lanka one of his most productive opponents in the longest format.

What has Jadeja contributed with the bat in the ongoing Galle Test?

India posted 460 for 9 in their first innings at Galle, with Devdutt Padikkal scoring 167 and Dhruv Jurel contributing 54. Padikkal's innings was the standout batting performance of the first innings, anchoring India's total and providing the platform from which the bowlers, including Jadeja, could operate.

Jadeja's broader batting record against Sri Lanka in Tests adds further context to his value in this series. He has scored 326 runs at an average of 65.20 across seven Tests against them, including a highest score of 175 not out in 2022. That combination of reliable lower-order runs and consistent wicket-taking makes him one of the most complete performers in India's Test XI.

The second Test of the series is scheduled for August 23 to 27, 2026, at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo.
