The New York Giants placed cornerback Sam Webb on the reserve/retired list on Sunday, ending a tenure that lasted just a few days.
Webb signed with the team Thursday and took part in one practice before appearing in Saturday’s preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings at MetLife Stadium. He played 14 snaps and recorded two tackles.
The 28-year-old undrafted free agent out of Missouri Western entered the NFL with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022. He has appeared in 36 games over four seasons with the Raiders, Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns. In seven games for the Browns last season, Webb posted eight tackles, one pass defended and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
He spent a short time in Denver Broncos training camp this summer before his release. The Giants signed Webb while addressing secondary injuries, also adding safety Ugochukwu Amadi and parting ways with David Long Jr. and D.J. James.
Webb’s sudden retirement leaves New York looking for more cornerback depth as the team continues preseason preparations.
