Red Bull Studios have released both a trailer and a release date for their new documentary ‘Reggae Girlz’.

The documentary from Oscar-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Trish Dalton will stream exclusively on JOLT on 27th August. Viewers will be able to purchase the documentary on major platforms such as Amazon and YouTube from 27th October.

Red Bull Studios have overseen the production of the documentary which shines a light on one of the biggest underdog sides in the women’s football. While also recognising the sheer brilliance of the side who became the first Caribbean nation to qualify for consecutive World Cups.

The programme follows Jamaica’s journey to the 2023 Women’s World Cup, where they defied expectations in a David vs Goliath saga. They won fans over as they competed with global powerhouses such as France and Brazil.

In their first match, Jamaica held France to a goalless draw, before defeating Panama courtesy of a Allyson Swaby header.

Their first-ever Women’s World Cup victory appears even more impressive due to the absence of Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw who had been sent off in their opening group stage encounter against the French. Shaw returned and captained the side as they once again defied the odds to draw 0-0 with Brazil to confirm their spot in the Round of 16.

Here the journey ended as the side bowed out with their heads held high after a 1-0 defeat to Colombia. The team, who capture the hearts of fans around the world, proved that with heart and determination, anything is possible.

What is the Reggae Girlz documentary about?

As well as championing on-pitch achievements, the documentary follows the team on their journey to Australia.

Before the 2023 tournament, the national team faced a severe lack of resources, poor planning, and unpaid salaries. The team suffered from poor travel conditions which meant late flight confirmations and unorganised training camps. Due to this, the side went months without any international friendlies and even missed official fixtures due to subpar planning.

While the squad recognised substandard accommodation, nutritional plans, and inadequate training infrastructure which made preparation for the tournament less than ideal.

It was when the team was struggling that the Bob and Rita Marley Foundation, and Cedella Marley, the Global Ambassador of the Jamaica Women’s Football Team (2014-2024), stepped in to support the team on their journey.

Reggae Girlz will be a vibrant portrayal of Jamaica’s heart and soul, with Bob Marley’s tracks featured heavily throughout the documentary. Fueled by the heart and determination of Jamaican people, the film embodies Marley’s iconic words ‘football is freedom’.

The film’s official soundtrack — Reggae Girlz: Movie Soundtrack — has been curated by Cedella Marley, daughter of Bob, who is an executive producer on the production.

Who is in the Reggae Girlz documentary?

The documentary highlights several stars of Jamaica’s historic World Cup campaign, such as Bunny Shaw and Konya Plummer.

Plummer, born in St. Mary, Jamaica, is a commanding defender and former captain of the national team. The 29-year-old entered the history books by leading her nation out at their first-ever Women’s World Cup in 2019. At just 21, she became the youngest captain in the history of the tournament.

Alongside Plummer, Manchester City’s start striker Shaw is featured in the documentary. The all-time leading goal-scorer for Jamaica has been named Concacaf Player of the Year and shortlisted for a multitude of global awards thanks to her finishing ability. Off the pitch, Shaw is a role model for girls back home whose journey mirrors her own. From playing barefoot in the streets, to reaching global stardom.

Deneisha Blackwood also plays a prominent role in the show. The 29-year-old, who currently plays her domestic football in Mexico, is a versatile star for Reggae Girlz. Playing at both left-back and in midfield, she is known for her tireless work rate and tenacious defending. She featured in all four matches during Jamaica’s history 2023 World Cup campaign.
