With how poorly the New York Yankees' catching situation has been throughout the entire campaign, it's only fair to suggest that New York needs to make a major change behind the plate.
Right now, the Yankees arguably have the worst catching unit in Major League Baseball, which simply won't help them win games come October if they get there.
The Boston Red Sox had some flexibility at the position with Adley Rutschman returning and decided to designate Jake Rogers for assignment just a few days after the trade that landed him and Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles.
While Rogers isn't much of an offensive threat and would hardly be an offensive upgrade for the Yankees, one writer believes the Red Sox might have given them a legitimate option to fix some of their problems behind the dish.
“The New York Yankees' options to solidify the catcher position at this point in time are going to be scarce. You can pretty much forget about finding anyone to supplant Austin Wells as the starter, but maybe an improvement over Ali Sánchez as the right-handed-hitting backup can be found. Thanks to the Boston Red Sox, an ideal option for that role might be on the table.
“The Red Sox activated Adley Rutschman from the IL on Tuesday, which created a logjam at catcher. Not wanting to carry three backstops, Boston decided to cut ties with Jake Rogers, who had accompanied Rutschman on the trip north from Baltimore,” Stephen Parello wrote.
It's tough to say that Rogers would really be too much of a threat for the Yankees if he were to sign with them off waivers.
Rogers is a career .200 hitter and hasn't really had many stretches when he's been an above-average player on that side of the baseball. Defensively, he's more than serviceable, which could be a benefit to New York.
