The Boston Red Sox offense suddenly looks dangerous again. One night after pounding out 16 hits in an 11-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston followed with 13 more hits in a 9-4 win Tuesday night at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox have scored 20 runs on 29 hits through the first two games of the series. Eight different Boston hitters recorded at least one hit Tuesday, while Adley Rutschman and Mickey Gasper supplied the power.

For a lineup that recently endured another frustrating disappearance, the two-game eruption could not have come at a better time. Boston has won three of its last four games, improving to 68-58 and remaining firmly involved in the American League playoff race.

Red Sox Bats Answer Arizona’s Biggest Punch

Boston immediately applied pressure against Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly. Ceddanne Rafaela and Nick Sogard opened the bottom of the first inning with consecutive singles before Wilyer Abreu drew a walk to load the bases.

Rutschman drove home two runs with a single into right field, and Caleb Durbin added a sacrifice fly to give the Red Sox a 3-0 advantage. That lead disappeared in the third inning when Gabriel Moreno launched a grand slam off Ranger Suárez. Moreno’s 428-foot blast briefly put Arizona ahead 4-3 and threatened to change the direction of the game.

Boston’s response revealed plenty about the lineup’s confidence. Rutschman tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning. It was his first homer since the Red Sox acquired him from the Baltimore Orioles before the trade deadline.

Durbin later scored on a wild pitch, putting Boston back in front for good.

The sequence was encouraging for a Red Sox team that has not always responded well after momentum shifts. Instead of allowing one difficult inning to derail the night, Boston immediately reclaimed control. Rutschman finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. His home run was his ninth of the season and represented another step forward for a player Boston expects to become an important part of its postseason push.

Boston’s Lineup Keeps Applying Pressure

The Red Sox did not rely solely on Rutschman. Andruw Monasterio delivered an RBI single in the fifth inning before Gasper opened the sixth with a 414-foot home run to center field. Willson Contreras added an RBI infield single later in the inning, extending Boston’s advantage to 8-4.

Gasper completed the scoring with an RBI single in the seventh. The 30-year-old finished 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Rafaela, Rutschman, Contreras and Monasterio also recorded multiple hits.

Boston’s production extended throughout the lineup. That depth has been missing during some of the club’s worst offensive stretches. The Red Sox recently suffered a five-game losing streak in which their lineup repeatedly failed to generate enough support for the pitching staff. They ended that slide with a 7-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, only to score four combined runs in their next two losses.

Boston now has scored 31 runs across its last three victories. That inconsistency remains the biggest question. The Red Sox have demonstrated that they can overwhelm opponents when their lineup is clicking, but they have also experienced stretches in which rallies are difficult to create and one deficit feels insurmountable.

The first two games against Arizona have shown what this lineup could become. Rafaela and Sogard are creating opportunities at the top. Rutschman is beginning to make an impact. Contreras continues to provide production in the middle, while players such as Gasper and Monasterio are extending the lineup.

Boston also did not allow four unanswered runs to create panic Tuesday. The Red Sox scored six times after Moreno’s grand slam and held Arizona scoreless over the final six innings.

Suárez earned his first victory since June 29 despite allowing four runs in the third. He completed 5 1/3 innings and improved to 5-3. The Red Sox will attempt to complete the sweep Wednesday at Fenway Park. Payton Tolle is scheduled to face Arizona right-hander Brandon Pfaadt.

Two explosive performances will not erase every concern about Boston’s offense. Another strong showing Wednesday, however, would provide even more evidence that the lineup has rediscovered its most dangerous form.
