Red Sox Rising Star Makes Powerful Declaration About Pitching In Boston originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

Payton Tolle understands exactly what makes Boston different. The young Red Sox pitcher already has experienced the intensity that comes with taking the mound at Fenway Park. He has heard the crowd rise after getting two strikes on a hitter. He has felt an entire ballpark preparing to erupt before he delivers a potentially inning-ending pitch.

Tolle does not merely tolerate those expectations. He embraces them.

“Boston is a baseball city,” Tolle said, according to Boston Sports Gordo. “I love that people get the game. You feel like you have the whole city behind you. It’s special, something that not a lot of places get. I love it. Right now, there’s no other place I’d want to pitch.”

That is exactly what Red Sox fans should want to hear from a pitcher rapidly emerging as one of the most exciting pieces of Boston’s future.

Payton Tolle Appears Built For Boston

Pitching in Boston is not easy. The expectations are enormous, patience can be limited and every outing is examined in detail. Tolle has quickly discovered that the same passionate fan base responsible for that pressure also can give a pitcher an extra jolt when he is dealing.

Payton Tolle on pitching in Boston:

Tolle delivered one of the most electrifying pitching performances of Boston’s season Aug. 7 against the Athletics. The left-hander struck out a career-high 14 batters over six innings while allowing only one run on two hits.

He did not issue a walk.

Tolle punctuated the performance by screaming as he left the mound, matching the energy pouring out of the Fenway stands.

“The energy that I was giving out, that scream of, ‘Here it is,’ that was because Fenway is right behind you the whole time,” Tolle told The Boston Globe.

That relationship between Tolle and the home crowd appears to be producing tangible results. His four-seam fastball has generated a 31% swing-and-miss rate at Fenway compared to 26% on the road, according to The Globe. His strikeout rate also has climbed from 22% away from Boston to an eye-opening 34% at home.

All four of his highest single-game strikeout totals have come at Fenway. That is not a pitcher shrinking under Boston’s spotlight. It is a potential ace feeding off it.

Red Sox May Have Found Their Next Homegrown Ace

Tolle entered the season with only five major league appearances and initially was optioned to Triple-A Worcester. He has responded by becoming one of Boston’s most dependable starters.

Through 20 starts, Tolle owns an 8-6 record, 2.97 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 115 innings. He also has averaged 10 strikeouts per nine innings. His most recent start showed he does not need to dominate in only one way.

Tolle struck out just four batters against the Toronto Blue Jays but allowed two hits over eight scoreless innings. He retired the final 17 hitters he faced as Boston snapped a five-game losing streak with a 7-0 victory. That outing came six days after his 14-strikeout masterpiece.

One performance was built around overpowering hitters. The other came through efficiency, command and weak contact. That ability to adjust is what separates an exciting young arm from a legitimate top-of-the-rotation starter.

Tolle is beginning to look like the latter. Garrett Crochet remains the established ace when healthy, while Sonny Gray offers valuable experience and stability. Tolle, however, gives Boston another potential frontline starter who is only 23 years old.

Boston Should Make Sure Tolle Stays Home

Tolle said the Red Sox have not approached him about a long-term contract extension, but he made it clear he would be open to the possibility. Boston already secured Roman Anthony as a foundational piece with a long-term deal. Tolle could become the pitching equivalent.

The Red Sox selected him with the 50th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. Barely two years later, he is producing like one of the best young starters in the American League. There is no immediate contractual urgency. Tolle remains under team control for years, and Boston has time to evaluate how his development continues.

His price, however, could rise significantly if performances like the ones against the Athletics and Blue Jays become routine.

Tolle loves Boston. Boston already appears to love Tolle.

The Red Sox may have found the type of pitcher who possesses both the talent and personality to thrive at Fenway Park for a long time. They eventually should make sure he gets that opportunity.
