BOSTON — The Red Sox promoted right-handed reliever Wyatt Olds from Triple-A Worcester on Monday and optioned left-hander Raymond Burgos.
Olds needed to be selected onto the 40-man roster. Boston will use an opener and bullpen game against the Diamondbacks on Monday at Fenway Park. And so Olds is here to provide length if needed. He has pitched two or more innings 10 times this season for the WooSox.
This marks Olds’ first ever major league stint. Boston drafted the 27-year-old in the seventh round in 2021 out of Oklahoma. He has a 5.33 ERA in 39 outings (50 ⅔ innings) for the WooSox. But he has an impressive .205 opponent batting average and 32.6% strikeout percentage.
“Wyatt’s got big stuff,” interim manager Chad Tracy said. “I’ve watched it for the last couple years in Worcester and over the course of this season has really dialed in as far as like limiting free passes and things like that.”
With Garrett Whitlock (elbow) and Justin Slaten (elbow) on the IL, Tracy said Olds provides a right-handed option with the ability to induce swing and miss.
“We need a right-hand reliever that we feel like in the zone has very, very good stuff and the ability to miss bats,” Tracy said. “And he’s worked really hard and felt like if there’s a lane to do it, this is the time to give him a shot.”
Olds was a non-roster invitee to 2026 Red Sox spring training camp. He has a 5.88 ERA in 185 minor league outings, including 42 starts. Control has been an issue with a 14.1% walk percentage in pro ball. He’s down to 12.3% this season.
Burgos saved the Red Sox bullpen Sunday in an 8-3 loss to the Pirates. He entered in the fifth inning after starter Patrick Sandoval pitched just four innings. Burgos threw a scoreless fifth and sixth inning, then returned to finish the game after a 2-hour, 34-minute rain delay.
Burgos also pitched three innings for Boston on consecutive days earlier this month. He has allowed three runs in 10 innings (2.70 ERA) across three appearances and two stints with Boston.
