On Wednesday, Rivals’ Jamie Shaw provided a recruiting update on 2027 5-star point guard Reese Alston.
The 6-foot-3, 170-pound Alston, ranked No. 6 overall in 2027 by Rivals, is a recruit who has been prioritized heavily by Mark Pope and the Kentucky staff, and it apparently has them right in the thick of things.
However, the Louisville Cardinals are also making a major push for Alston, potentially making this a Cats vs. Cards battle for the top-10 prospect.
“According to sources I have spoken with, Kentucky and Louisville are currently the two programs generating the most buzz in Alston’s recruitment,” Shaw wrote. “One source, given where things currently stand, believes the recruitment ultimately comes down to those two schools, with Louisville holding more familiarity within Alston’s circle while Kentucky continues to build its relationship.”
An interesting note to add on top of Kentucky’s recruitment is that Mikhail McLean attended the same high school that Alston currently goes to, so take that for what it’s worth.
Alston has already visited Louisville and Wichita State, and it is assumed that Kentucky will schedule a visit with him in the near future, though that has not yet been scheduled. Pope prioritized Alston a few weeks back when he went to the Puma PRO16 event to watch the talented guard instead of making his way to Peach Jam on day one, which really opened some eyes.
Shaw later wrote that Alston’s current plan is to make his commitment before the early November signing period, so we may not be waiting much longer to see how this recruitment ends.
Will Pope and the Cats be able to get it done? That potential visit to Lexington looms large as something that could decide which school ultimately wins out.
