FC Barcelona are close to securing the renewal of one of their most promising young players.

After several weeks in which the club outlined their plans for Pedro Villar, the 18-year-old is expected to extend his contract with Barça, reports Mundo Deportivo.

Villar’s current deal was due to expire in 2027, so the agreement will allow Barcelona to secure his future for longer.

A breakthrough season

Villar was one of the key players for Juvenil A last season before earning an opportunity with Barça Atletic.

He made nine appearances under Juliano Belletti during the decisive final stretch of the campaign.

He also scored several important goals for Pol Planas’ Juvenil A side, establishing himself as a midfielder with a particular ability to arrive in the box and contribute goals.

Despite still being eligible for the youth team, Villar began pre-season with Barça Atletic.

Belletti’s squad has undergone significant changes this summer and is still being finalised, with the first team’s needs also influencing the composition of the reserve side.

Within that context, Villar is expected to play an important role for Barça Atletic in the upcoming season.

A versatile midfielder

Villar joined Barcelona from Val Minor, one of Galicia’s respected youth academies. He arrived at La Masia alongside Pedro ‘Dro’ Fernandez.

The youngster can operate both as an interior midfielder and as a pivot, giving him tactical flexibility.

At La Masia, coaches particularly value his understanding of the game and discipline.

Barcelona have clearly been impressed by his development, and the planned renewal reflects the club’s confidence that he can continue progressing within the Barça system.

Quim Junyent has already left the club, while Tommy Marques and the Fernandez cousins, Guille and Toni, are also expected to be on their way out.

Meanwhile, Brian Farinas is expected to earn a spot in the first-team squad under Hansi Flick, leaving Barça Atletic light on options in midfield.

It should pave the way for Villar to grow into a regular in Belletti’s side as they look to win promotion back to the RFEF Primera Federacion.
