Kosta Nedeljkovic to Rangers move leaves Aston Villa with more questions than answers

Rangers are closing in on Kosta Nedeljkovic, and for Aston Villa this looks like another case of a young signing being pushed further down the road. According to TeamTalk, Rangers are set to complete a season-long loan for the Serbian right-back, with an obligation to buy worth £4 million, a figure that tells its own story.

The report states that the move is effectively done, that Nedeljkovic will head to Glasgow to complete the formalities, and that he is set to become Rangers’ 11th signing of the summer. It also notes that the deal has been under discussion for a couple of weeks and is now “over the line”. For Rangers, this is straightforward squad building. For Villa, it is harder to dress up.

Nedeljkovic joined from Red Star Belgrade in January 2024 for a reported £8 million fee. Since then, “Opportunities in the Premier League proved limited under Unai Emery”, and that is the key line. If you pay £8 million for a 20-year-old full-back, the idea is usually development into a first-team option or growth in value. Sending him out again, and this time with an obligation set at £4 million, points towards a loss being accepted.

Rangers see attacking value in Kosta Nedeljkovic

From a Rangers perspective, the logic is obvious. The article says Nedeljkovic “ticks a big transfer box for Rangers” and that Derek McInnes wanted a more attack-minded right-back. That profile matters. The piece explains that Dujon Sterling and Ross McCrorie are “more defensive-minded”, while James Penrice has already shown “the value of greater offensive threat from the flanks after he scored on his debut”.

Nedeljkovic is described as an “athletic full-back” who has “impressed with his pace and ability to contribute going forward”. He has senior Serbia caps and will join up with Vanja Dragojevic, becoming the second Serbian arrival of the window. There is a clear recruitment line here, age, mobility, upside, resale potential.

Aston Villa transfer strategy under focus

This is where Villa supporters may start asking blunt questions. If the obligation is “expected to be triggered based on the number of appearances”, then Villa are not merely loaning out a player for experience. They are preparing to move on. If so, why buy him for £8 million in the first place, and why has his standing dropped so sharply?

The report says he will bring “competition and fresh energy at the back” as Rangers continue their rebuild. Fine. It also says his “blend of international experience and potential makes him an exciting addition”. Also fine. Yet those are the same qualities that should have made him useful to Villa.

Our View

As an Aston Villa supporter, this is the kind of report that grates. Not because Kosta Nedeljkovic is leaving, that can happen, but because of what it says about planning. We signed him for £8 million, gave him little visible pathway, watched his value slide, and now seem ready to let him go for £4 million. That is not clever business, it is messy business.

You can say “Opportunities in the Premier League proved limited under Unai Emery” and move on, but supporters should not. Why were they limited? Was he not ready, was he badly assessed, or did the club simply change direction? Those are very different explanations, and none reflects brilliantly on the process.

There is also the irritation of reading how he “ticks a big transfer box for Rangers”. Why was that box not worth ticking for us? Young, quick, international pedigree, attacking intent, all of that sounds useful. Villa need depth, energy and competition too. If Rangers can see a player there, why can’t Villa make it work?

Maybe Nedeljkovic thrives in Glasgow and the obligation is triggered quickly. If that happens, good luck to him. The frustration is with Villa, not the player. This feels like another example of stockpiling talent without a proper integration plan, then cutting losses before anybody really knows what they had. Supporters have every right to be underwhelmed by that.
