Benfica Transfer Interest Could Open Door for Chelsea Defender Exit

Benfica are pushing to strengthen at centre-back and two England-based names have emerged as leading options, with Caught Offside reporting that Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo is firmly in the conversation alongside Southampton’s Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

The Portuguese club “have a strong need for a central defender”, and that urgency appears to be shaping their market. A move for Harwood-Bellis has already met resistance. It is reported that Benfica “have just had a £17m offer for Taylor Harwood-Bellis rejected”, with Southampton “looking for something closer to £30m”. That valuation may yet prove difficult to bridge, particularly so late in the window.

Attention therefore turns to Tosin. The 28-year-old has seen his position at Stamford Bridge weaken. According to the report, “Tosin has been pushed further down the pecking order at Chelsea by the return to fitness of Levi Colwill and the signing of Maxence Lacroix.” The same piece adds that he has been retained “largely to provide experience and leadership”, but with “Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson” now in the squad, that role has diminished.

From Chelsea’s side, the situation is straightforward. “Chelsea would love to sell him as they look to clear out their bulky squad,” and Benfica’s need could make this one of the more practical deals available in the final weeks of the market. The article frames it clearly, “Benfica need to buy; Chelsea want to sell”. In market terms, that tends to create momentum.

There is further context in Lisbon too. “The departure of Antonio Silva and Nicolas Otamendi has left the Eagles with a major gap in the centre of their defence,” and while Clément Lenglet has arrived on loan, more is required. For now, “Tosin feels the more likely at this point, but anything can happen in these final weeks.”

Our View

As a Chelsea supporter, this feels like one of those sensible exits that could suit everyone. Tosin is a solid professional, experienced, composed and reliable in the right setup, but it does look as though his pathway to regular football has narrowed. If he is genuinely behind Levi Colwill and Maxence Lacroix, and if the squad is still too crowded, then moving him on for the right fee makes sense.

From a Chelsea perspective, there is always a balance to strike between trimming numbers and keeping enough depth. You do not want to leave yourself short across a long season. Still, if Benfica are serious and Chelsea can negotiate a fair package, this has the feel of a clean deal. It would free space, reduce congestion and potentially allow resources to be redirected where they are needed more.

There is also a football case for Tosin himself. Benfica is a major club, they should offer European-level pressure, and he could play a much bigger role there than he is likely to at Chelsea. Supporters generally want to see outgoings handled decisively, and this would fall into that category. If Harwood-Bellis proves too expensive, Chelsea fans may quietly hope Benfica move quickly for Tosin and get it done.
