Ipswich Town Transfer News: Derry Scherhant Emerges as Ambitious £15m Target

Ipswich Town are pressing ahead in the market, with TeamTalk reporting that the newly promoted Premier League side are making a serious attempt to sign Freiburg attacker Derry Scherhant. The 23-year-old has quickly become a name of interest at Portman Road, and sources indicate Ipswich are making a “considerable push” to bring him to England this summer.

Scherhant is viewed as a versatile option, primarily operating from the left but also capable of playing through the middle or from the right. That flexibility carries obvious appeal for a squad preparing for the demands of a top-flight campaign under Gary O’Neil. Ipswich need depth, athleticism and adaptability in forward areas, and Scherhant appears to fit that brief.

Derry Scherhant Valuation Sets Tone

Freiburg are understood to be standing firm on their price. The Bundesliga club have placed a valuation of €17.5million, which equates to £15m, and it is suggested that “It will take an offer at that figure for Freiburg to even consider letting Scherdant go and his ultimate price tag is likely to be higher.” That is a significant outlay for Ipswich, particularly for a player who only joined Freiburg last summer after a €2million move from Hertha Berlin.

There is, however, a logic to the pursuit. Scherhant contributed seven goals and two assist in 44 appearances across the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Europa League last season. His profile, pace and physicality point to a player with room for growth, and those qualities are often prized by clubs seeking value before a wider breakout arrives.

Freiburg Stance Leaves Ipswich Work to Do

Ipswich’s interest is genuine, but this is far from straightforward. Freiburg head coach Julian Schuster is reportedly planning with the forward for the coming season, which naturally strengthens the German side’s hand in negotiations. TeamTalk adds that “Sources have made clear that Ipswich are not the only side keen.” That line matters, because it introduces competition and could accelerate any decision-making process.

From the player’s side, the move has appeal. “Scherhant himself is very open to the idea of a move to England.” Financially, the step is attractive, and the chance to test himself in the Premier League would carry obvious weight at this stage of his career.

Ipswich Town Transfer News Worth Watching

The central question is whether Ipswich will go all the way to £15m, and whether they can persuade Scherhant that Portman Road is the ideal platform. The report states, “Whether the Tractor Boys will meet Freiburg’s asking price, or fully convince that Portman Road offers the right platform for his development, remains to be seen.” For now, this feels like one to watch closely in the weeks ahead.

Our View

From an Ipswich Town perspective, this is exactly the kind of report supporters will welcome. Scherhant sounds like a player with upside, energy and flexibility, and that matters massively when you are preparing for a season where every point could be hard-earned. If the club are making a “considerable push”, it suggests there is real conviction behind the scenes, not just a casual enquiry.

The £15m figure will naturally split opinion among fans. It is serious money for Ipswich, especially for someone who was not a guaranteed starter every week at Freiburg. At the same time, the market has changed. If the recruitment team believe his “pace, physicality and eye for goal” can translate to English football, then this may be the sort of calculated gamble a promoted side has to take.

The biggest attraction here is probably his ceiling. Seven goals and two assists do not leap off the page, but context matters. He has played in a strong league, he has been exposed to European football, and at 23 there is reason to think there is more to come. For Ipswich, signing players before they fully explode is often the smart lane.

There is also a wider message in a move like this. If Ipswich can compete for sought-after talent from a club like Freiburg, it shows ambition. Supporters will want additions who can genuinely raise the level, not just fill the squad. Scherhant feels like a player who could do that, provided the numbers stay sensible and the pathway is clear.
