LAKE FOREST, Ill. (WGN) — Shortly after the Chicago Bears received positive news on the injury front, the injury bug came back around to bite them again, this time in the running backs room. First reported by the Chicago Tribune's Sean Hammond, Bears running back Kyle Monangai seemingly injured his right knee during a non-padded practice on Sunday. Hammond said he got tangled up with defensive tackle Grady Jarrett before both players went to the ground. Monangai limped off the field with a trainer, while Jarrett was seen visibly upset with himself, per Hammond. The severity of Monangai's injury is unclear at this time. Earlier in the day on Sunday, the Bears activated offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Trapilo suffered a torn patellar tendon during Chicago's NFC Wild Card win over the Green Bay Packers on Jan. 10, 2026, which can take as long as 12 months to recover from. Trapilo was added back to the active roster just over seven months after suffering the injury. Injury Report If Monangai is officially added to the injured list, he'll join several key Bears who are currently out of commission. Luther Burden is expected to miss the rest of the preseason with a groin injury, but team officials hope he will return before the team's Week 1 matchup against the Carolina Panthers. Head coach Ben Johnson expects Braxton Jones, considered a frontrunner in the Bears' starting left tackle race, to be back sometime this coming week. Key defenders like Montez Sweat, Coby Bryant and Kyler Gordon are also sidelined, with Sweat having a similar return timeline as Jones, while Gordon's return is "unknown," and Bryant will miss four to six months after undergoing knee surgery last Friday. “It's the nature of football. It really is. I've said this before. The game that we play is a game of attrition," defensive coordinator Dennis Allen said on Aug. 9. "The more guys that you can get ready to go out there and perform and perform at a winning level, the better your team's going to be. At some point, every team faces some sort of adversity, injuries being one of them. "I mean, quite frankly, you'd rather have to deal with those things now than have to deal with them in the middle of the season. So, it sucks when guys go down and they miss time. It's hard to build that chemistry and have the same group going together. And yet, it's an opportunity for a lot of other guys to go out there and show what they can do." The Bears' next preseason game is on Saturday at 6 p.m. CST in Cincinnati against the Bengals.
