Calum Scanlon Loan Move Nears as Liverpool Left-Back Closes in on Cardiff Return

Liverpool defender Calum Scanlon is moving closer to a temporary exit from Anfield, with Cardiff City emerging as the expected destination for the 2026/27 campaign. According to the Daily Mail, the 21-year-old is “closing in on” a return to the Welsh club after a productive spell there in the second half of last season.

Scanlon was one of the younger players to benefit from Andoni Iraola’s summer schedule, featuring in all three matches of Liverpool’s pre-season tour in the United States. With a number of senior figures absent following the World Cup, there was room for academy and fringe talent to step forward. Scanlon took that opportunity well, logging just under 90 minutes across fixtures against Sunderland, Wrexham and Leeds, and offering a composed reminder of his potential.

Cardiff City pushing to secure Scanlon loan

The expectation, however, has long been that regular first-team football would be required elsewhere. Cardiff City have been “working hard” to bring him back, while Sheffield Wednesday are also said to have made a “concerted effort” to land him. In the end, familiarity and fit may prove decisive.

Scanlon made eight appearances for Cardiff during his previous loan, contributing to their successful push for promotion back to the Championship. That existing understanding of the environment, plus the trust already built, gives this move a practical feel from all sides.

Liverpool pathway shaped by left-back competition

At Liverpool, Scanlon’s route into league action looks crowded. Milos Kerkez and Kostas Tsimikas sit ahead of him in the left-back order, and that reality makes a loan move a sensible piece of squad management. For Iraola and the club’s recruitment and development staff, there is clear value in placing a young player where minutes are realistic and pressure is meaningful.

His progress has already been tested by injury setbacks over the last two years, disrupting momentum at a stage when rhythm matters most. He has not played a competitive first-team game for Liverpool since Europa League appearances in late 2023, which adds further importance to finding a stable platform this season.

Championship move could aid long-term development

There is still belief around Scanlon’s talent level. Jürgen Klopp once described him as “fun to watch”, and that earlier endorsement reflected the technical quality and attacking instinct that made him such a highly regarded prospect. A return to the Championship would offer him the chance to rebuild continuity, sharpen his defensive side and prove he can stay available over a full season.

If the move is completed, Liverpool will view it as a strategic step rather than a holding pattern. For Scanlon, Cardiff City may again provide the right stage, regular football, responsibility and the possibility of turning promise into progress.

Our View

From a Liverpool perspective, this feels like exactly the right call. Scanlon clearly has ability, and pre-season gave supporters another glimpse of why coaches have continued to rate him so highly. He looked tidy, intelligent and comfortable in Iraola’s setup, but there is no getting around the need for proper senior minutes now.

Keeping him around as third-choice or fourth-choice cover would do very little for his development. A Championship loan, especially at a club where he already knows the dressing room and the demands, offers a far better route. Cardiff is not a gamble for him, it is a familiar landing spot with the chance to play meaningful football every week.

Liverpool fans should be pleased with this kind of planning. Not every young player needs a dramatic breakthrough at Anfield straight away. Sometimes the best pathway is to step away, play regularly, learn the hard side of the game and come back stronger. That is particularly true for a player whose progress has already been interrupted by injuries.

There is also something encouraging in the fact that multiple clubs wanted him. That suggests his profile remains strong and that his qualities are recognised beyond Liverpool. If he stays fit and strings together a full season, this loan could become one of the smarter pieces of business around the squad. Supporters will hope he returns next summer with momentum, confidence and a real chance of pushing higher up the pecking order.
