Cardiff City Close in on Liverpool Defender Calum Scanlon

Liverpool defender Calum Scanlon is set to return to Cardiff City as the 21-year-old prepares for another important season of senior football.

According to Wales Online, Cardiff are closing in on a deal for the left-back, who spent the second half of last season with the Welsh club and played his part in their promotion back to the Championship.

A return appears to suit all parties. Scanlon remains highly regarded at Liverpool, but with senior minutes likely to be limited under Andoni Iraola, another spell of regular first-team football represents a logical next step.

Cardiff Move Offers Scanlon Valuable Minutes

Scanlon made a positive impression during his previous spell with Cardiff after arriving on loan in February 2026.

His performances helped Cardiff secure promotion and provided the defender with the sort of sustained senior exposure Liverpool have been seeking for several of their younger players.

Wales Online report that his return should be completed once the remaining paperwork has been finalised.

Scanlon also featured in all three matches during Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States before returning to the Under-21s setup.

That involvement suggests Iraola and his coaching staff wanted a closer look at the defender before making a decision over his immediate future.

Liverpool Contract Situation Remains Important

Scanlon is entering the final year of his current Liverpool contract, although he is expected to sign fresh terms before departing.

That would be an important piece of business for Liverpool.

Allowing a promising academy player to enter the final months of his deal while developing elsewhere would create unnecessary uncertainty, particularly given the club may still see a pathway into the senior squad.

Liverpool signed Scanlon from Birmingham City in February 2021, with the defender later making his senior debut against Toulouse in the Europa League in October 2023.

He signed a new contract in April 2024 before joining Millwall on loan, although injury disrupted that spell.

Long-Term Liverpool Opportunity Still Exists

Liverpool’s left-back situation gives Scanlon something tangible to work towards.

Kostas Tsimikas is currently expected to provide senior cover this season, although his longer-term future remains uncertain.

That could eventually create an opening for Scanlon if he performs consistently in the Championship.

For now, Cardiff looks like an ideal environment. He already knows the club, has enjoyed success there and should have an opportunity to build on the progress made last season.

Liverpool can monitor that development closely while retaining control of a player who may yet have a significant role to play at Anfield.

Our View

From a Liverpool perspective, this feels like exactly the sort of loan move supporters should be pleased to see.

Scanlon has already proved he can contribute at Cardiff, so sending him back into a familiar environment makes plenty of sense. He should be playing regularly at 21, particularly when there is no obvious route into Iraola’s starting XI this season.

The encouraging part is that Liverpool appear prepared to protect his value with a new contract before the move goes through. That suggests the club still believe there could be a future for him.

There is also a genuine opportunity waiting further down the line.

Tsimikas remains useful cover, but Liverpool cannot rely on the same succession plan indefinitely. If Scanlon can establish himself as a strong Championship left-back over the coming season, he could return next summer with far greater experience and confidence.

Supporters have seen plenty of academy players disappear into a sequence of unproductive loans. This one feels much more purposeful.

Scanlon knows Cardiff, Cardiff know Scanlon, and he has already experienced success there. Now he needs 35 or 40 senior appearances and the chance to show whether he can take another meaningful step towards Liverpool’s first team.

For a young defender still developing, this looks like smart business.
