Cody Gakpo to Tottenham: Spurs Push Forward as Liverpool Weigh Summer Sale

Tottenham have moved a step closer in their pursuit of Cody Gakpo, and this now looks like more than routine summer noise. According to Voetbal International, Spurs and Gakpo are aligned on the broad terms of a deal, with the North London club also making contact with Liverpool as they intensify the move.

That matters, because once a buying club has the player largely on board, the conversation shifts. It becomes about price, structure and whether the selling club truly want to keep him. In Gakpo’s case, Liverpool hold the cards on paper. He is under contract until the summer of 2030, so there is no pressure to sell cheaply, or quickly.

Tottenham transfer plans gather pace

The report states, “Cody Gakpo is op hoofdlijnen akkoord met Tottenham Hotspur,” which tells you Spurs have already done substantial groundwork. Roberto De Zerbi, now in charge at Tottenham, is said to want the Dutch attacker as part of his evolving forward line. That interest appears firm even if Spurs also complete a move for Savinho from Manchester City.

Crucially, there has been no formal bid yet. That keeps this in the serious interest category rather than the final stages. Still, the fact Spurs have approached Anfield suggests they believe the deal is realistic.

Liverpool transfer stance now under focus

From Liverpool’s side, this is where judgment is required. Gakpo has had useful spells at Anfield across three and a half seasons, offering flexibility across the front line and a reliable output level without ever fully becoming the central figure in attack. If Tottenham are serious, Liverpool must decide whether they see him as essential under Andoni Iraola, or as a saleable asset capable of funding other priorities.

The source also indicates all parties expect a positive resolution. If that proves correct, Gakpo’s Liverpool chapter may be heading towards its conclusion, and Tottenham may be landing a Premier League-proven attacker entering his prime.

Our View

From a Liverpool perspective, this is the sort of report that creates more questions than answers. Gakpo has never felt like a bad player to have around. He works, he produces moments, and he covers multiple positions. At the same time, you can understand why a sale might be considered if the fee is strong and Iraola wants to reshape the squad in his own image.

The concern is obvious. Selling to a domestic rival always carries risk, especially when the player already knows the league and could fit quickly. If Spurs are getting a forward who is settled, versatile and still has years left on his contract, Liverpool cannot afford to be casual in negotiations. This has to be top value or no deal.

There is also the wider squad picture. Liverpool need attackers who can be trusted across a long season, and depth disappears fast once injuries hit. Letting Gakpo go only makes sense if there is a clear replacement plan, not vague confidence that someone else can cover it.

So the feeling is mixed. There is logic to a sale, but only if Liverpool are convinced he is expendable and only if the number is properly high. Otherwise, this could become one of those transfers that looks tidy in July and irritating by November.
