Newcastle Target Carlos Baleba as Midfield Rebuild Accelerates After Bruno Guimaraes Exit

Newcastle United are exploring a move for Carlos Baleba as they attempt to reshape their midfield before the Premier League season begins, with talkSPORT reporting that Brighton’s 22-year-old is firmly on the club’s radar.

It has been a bruising summer at St James’ Park. Bruno Guimaraes has gone, Sandro Tonali has also departed, and Matthias Jaissle has inherited a squad that suddenly looks light in one of the most important areas of the pitch. Recruitment has brought in youth, namely Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur, but the sense around Newcastle is that experience is now required, and quickly.

Baleba fits much of that brief. He already has 92 Premier League appearances for Brighton, and his blend of athleticism, ball-winning and progression makes him one of the more intriguing midfielders available in the market. The timing may also suit Newcastle. Manchester United had tracked him for some time, but their move for Andrey Santos appears to have changed the picture.

As reported, “Carlos Beleba is a player attracting admiring glances from for Magpies,” and there is a belief that Newcastle are now well placed to test Brighton’s resolve. There is, however, little expectation that this would be straightforward. “Manchester United have been keen on Baleba for the last couple of transfer windows and at the moment it doesn’t look like they are going to pursue that interest this time around.”

The financial backdrop matters here. “Obviously, Newcastle have lost both of their starting midfielders Sandro Tonali to Spurs for £100m and Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal for a guaranteed £75m.” That gives Newcastle room to act, even if Brighton are renowned for standing firm in negotiations. As was put succinctly, “They do have money to spend.” Yet the warning attached to that is equally significant, “Brighton will be tough negotiators though.”

Perhaps the most interesting detail concerns valuation. “There’s talk in the north east that they can get Baleba for a little at £65m – I’m not entirely convinced of that asking price.” That feels like the key line. Brighton rarely part with elite young assets cheaply, and Baleba’s age, contract position and Premier League pedigree all strengthen their hand.

Newcastle’s wider rebuild is also ongoing. Benfica right-back Amar Dedic remains a target, while Jaissle has had to improvise during pre-season amid injuries and absences. With a 3-1 defeat to Everton exposing a few vulnerabilities, the urgency is obvious. Baleba may not be the only answer, but he increasingly looks like one of the clearest.

Our View

From a Newcastle perspective, this report makes sense on paper, but it still raises plenty of doubts. Baleba is a very good player, no question, but this feels like one of those deals that sounds easier from afar than it will be in reality. Brighton know exactly what they have, and if Newcastle think £65m gets it done.

The bigger concern is the position the club have put themselves in. Losing both Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali in the same summer is seismic, and replacing that quality with potential alone would be a huge risk. Baleba has promise and proven Premier League minutes, but asking one player to arrive and immediately steady the midfield is a massive demand.

There is also the familiar anxiety around timing. Newcastle are again heading towards the start of the season with clear gaps in the squad and too much reliance on hope. If Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has already turned them down, and if other targets are still unresolved, supporters will wonder whether the market is being driven by strategy or by urgency.

Jaissle deserves backing, especially given what he has walked into, but fans will want more than admiration and interest. They will want certainty, quality and speed. Baleba could be an excellent signing, but if this turns into another drawn-out chase while the season starts without the right reinforcements, frustration will grow very quickly.
