WORCESTER — Reinforcements could be coming soon for the Boston Red Sox. With rumors swirling around the timeline of when outfielder Roman Anthony will return from the injured list, shortstop Trevor Story worked out in Worcester Friday and is scheduled to start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, according to sources. With country singer Chris Stapleton hosting a concert at Fenway Park Friday, Story and fellow injured teammate Isiah Kiner-Falefa trained with members of Triple-A Worcester‘s staff at Polar Park earlier in the day. “(Story is) ramping up,” Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy told media ahead of his team‘s game in Pittsburgh on Friday.

Story is reportedly planning to begin his rehab stint on Sunday when the WooSox wrap up a six-game homestand with the Buffalo Bisons. The 33-year-old infielder, who landed on the IL with a sports hernia injury on May 16 and was transferred to the 60-day IL on June 4, hit .206 with 3 HR and 19 RBIs in 41 games with Boston. Story and Kiner-Falefa both currently have lockers inside the WooSox clubhouse. “It‘s cool to get those guys close and getting ready,” Suarez said.
Anthony (hand) — and Kiner-Falefa (forearm) — could soon follow suit. Tracy told media in Pittsburgh that Anthony is “creeping closer” towards a rehab assignment, and although a source said that Anthony most likely won‘t return to action this weekend, there‘s a belief that Anthony could join an affiliate to begin a rehab stint starting as early as Tuesday with Double-A Portland (who are playing in Maine) or Triple-A Worcester (who play in New York). “We‘re getting closer,” Tracy said.
