The sports agent who built his career alongside LeBron James has expanded Klutch into basketball, football, baseball and soccer while setting his sights on the next generation of athletes.

Rich Paul has turned Klutch Sports Group into one of the biggest agencies in North American sports.

The company, which Paul founded in 2012, now manages an estimated $7.27 billion in playing and non-playing contracts. That figure helped place Klutch and its parent company, United Talent Agency, at No. 5 on Forbes’ latest ranking of the most valuable sports agencies in North America.

The $7.27 billion is not Klutch’s valuation. It reflects the value of the contracts the agency manages for its clients. Of that total, about $6.27 billion comes from playing contracts and another $1 billion from endorsements and other non-playing deals.

The numbers show just how far Klutch has come from its beginnings as a basketball-focused agency.

“We started out in just basketball,” Paul told Newsweek. He said opportunities to expand into other sports came earlier, but he wanted to make sure the company was ready before making the move.

Today, Klutch represents athletes across basketball, football, baseball and soccer. Its roster includes LeBron James, WNBA star A’ja Wilson, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, MLB star Rafael Devers and soccer player Kai Havertz. Among the top agents at the firm is Nicole Lynn, who has secured historic deals while serving as the President of Football Operations.

Paul’s own influence has grown alongside the agency.

He ranks among the most powerful agents in sports, with roughly $2.77 billion in active playing contracts tied to his individual basketball clients. That includes some of the NBA’s biggest names and reflects the negotiating power Paul has built over more than a decade in the business.

His path into sports representation was anything but traditional.

Paul met James in 2002 and later worked at Creative Artists Agency before launching Klutch. In 2019, UTA invested in the company and named Paul head of its sports division. He later became the first Black member of UTA’s board of directors.

His rise has also made him part of a larger conversation about access to the sports business.

In 2019, the NCAA introduced a rule requiring certain agents representing prospective NBA players to hold a bachelor’s degree. The policy was quickly nicknamed the “Rich Paul Rule” because Paul never graduated from college. After backlash, the NCAA changed the requirement.

Now, Paul is looking beyond professional sports.

He said youth sports are becoming a major focus for him, particularly as young athletes navigate name, image and likeness opportunities.

“Youth sports is something that’s my next big thing in terms of really investing,” Paul told Newsweek.

That next chapter would extend Klutch’s reach even further, potentially allowing the company to work with athletes earlier in their careers as they learn how to manage endorsements, money and branding.

For Paul, the growth is another marker of how much Klutch has evolved.

What began as a basketball agency built around a small roster has become a multibillion-dollar operation spanning several major sports. And Paul appears to be just as focused on what comes next as he is on how far the company has already come.
