The Lloyds Tour of Britain Women gets under way on Wednesday, with roads closing to allow the cycling race to pass through.

The opening stage will start and finish in Cockermouth, Cumbria, and take riders on a 158.9km (99 mile) route through communities across west and north Cumberland.

The race route will pass through places including Whitehaven, Workington, Maryport, Allonby, Silloth, Abbeytown, Wigton, Caldbeck and Aspatria, with rolling road closures expected from about 10:40 to 16:30 BST.

Further stages in the five-day race will go through Blackpool, Llandudno and Hay‑on‑Wye before finishing in Leamington Spa on 23 August.

Cumberland Council said most roads on the route would be subject to rolling closures, meaning traffic would be temporarily held for short periods as the riders and race convoy passed through.

Wednesday's race is expected to pass through at the following times:

  • Whitehaven: 11:43 to 11:55
  • High Harrington: 11:57 to 12:07
  • Workington: 12:01 to 12:17
  • Flimby: 12:12 to 12:25
  • Maryport: 12:16 to 12:30
  • Allonby: 12:28 to 12:45
  • Silloth: 12:44 to 13:04
  • Wigton: 13:12 to 13:38
  • Caldbeck: 13:30 to 14:00
  • Aspatria: 14:00 to 14:37
  • Cockermouth: 14:21 to 15:50

Lead vehicles may arrive about 15 minutes before the riders.

Road closures in Cockermouth will also accommodate the start and finish areas.

Main Street and Station Street will be closed from 04:00 to 18:30, while South Street will be closed from 07:00 to 17:00.

Crown Street, Sullart Street and Gallowbarrow would be closed between 09:00 and 11:30 to allow event infrastructure to be installed safely, the council said.

In addition, the A595 between Bothel and Cockermouth will be closed from around 14:00 to 15:35 while riders completed the final sections of the stage.
