Rocky Flintoff has everything to be fast-tracked into England team: David Lloyd

Rocky Flintoff struck 123 off 76 balls in his maiden Lancashire century during the One-Day Cup match against Somerset at Taunton. The innings contained 10 fours and 7 sixes, with Flintoff reaching his hundred off just 65 balls. His performance came as part of a dominant Lancashire display that saw the county post 443 for 6, their highest-ever List A total, while Somerset managed 269 in reply. Lancashire won by 174 runs.

At 18 years and 126 days, Flintoff became Lancashire's youngest first-team centurion, surpassing Archie MacLaren's record that had stood for 136 years. MacLaren previously held the distinction at 18 years and 256 days. Flintoff's century came during a 214-run partnership with Keaton Jennings, who scored 156 off 127 balls. Former England batter David Lloyd assessed Flintoff's performance and potential for international cricket.

"I just think he can actually be fast-tracked. He’s got everything. I think he’s an international cricketer. He’s very similar in his mannerisms to his dad, and certainly he has a short-arm jab, pull shot, and he’s about six foot five anyway; he’s a big lad, and he can pull it away into the leg-side, very reminiscent of his father," Lloyd said as quoted by India Today.

David Lloyd's assessment of Flintoff's England potential

Lloyd highlighted Flintoff's temperament and England's recent approach to talent development. The former Lancashire player emphasised the young batter's composure and the national team's track record in identifying emerging talent.

"He's a lovely lad, he's got a good temperament. And I just think that it can actually be fast-tracked. When you look at a player, somebody's got to make a judgement as to what standard they're going to be. And I think England have been pretty good in recent years in identifying talent and stretching and pushing them forward, and I think they can do that with Flintoff," Lloyd said.

Career progression and record-breaking milestones

Flintoff entered Lancashire's first-team structure in July 2024 at 16 years and 111 days, becoming the county's youngest-ever player in the One-Day Cup. He has since progressed through England's age-group pathway, becoming the youngest England Under-19 batter to score a century with 106 against Sri Lanka. In January 2025, he scored 126 for England Lions against Cricket Australia XI in Brisbane at 16 years and 291 days, making him the youngest Lions centurion and surpassing his father Andrew Flintoff's record in that category.

Before his Somerset hundred, Flintoff had accumulated 473 runs across 15 List A innings at an average of 39.41. He had returned to action this season following a back injury sustained in 2025. His maiden century represented a significant milestone in his early career trajectory.
