You only get one Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debut!

Two rookies stepped into the Octagon yesterday (Sat., Aug. 15, 2026) at UFC 330 inside Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Collectively, the Brazilian newcomers went 1-1, with one of them delivering a picture-perfect debut.

Now that the dust has settled, let’s grade their respective performances below:

Eduardo Chapolin

Flyweight Eduardo Chapolin has long been one of the better prospects outside UFC. After a stint on Season 31 of The Ultimate Fighter, he received another opportunity on Season 9 of Contender Series, where he defeated fellow top prospect An Ho but did not earn a contract.

Chapolin finally received his call on just four days’ notice, stepping up to face Charles Johnson and putting on a strong performance despite the result.

The Brazilian started the fight by firing nasty calf kicks. Johnson attempted the first takedown, but Chapolin showcased perfect defense. A little later, Chapolin stung Johnson and stuffed another shot with a beautiful sprawl.

Chapolin then appeared to hurt Johnson with a punch to the eye, putting him on the ropes, although the broadcast replay showed that it was an eye poke. Shortly afterward, Chapolin landed an illegal knee on Johnson, resulting in a one-point deduction.

Chapolin began the second round by marching Johnson down. Johnson started showboating—and then got cracked and dropped. Somehow, Johnson survived, and Chapolin began slowing down badly as the round continued.

With Chapolin nearly out of energy, Johnson stepped on the gas to begin the final round. A front kick hurt Chapolin, who attempted to wrestle his way to safety but instead surrendered his back. Johnson then tricked the exhausted Brazilian into falling victim to the Scottish Twister (watch highlights).

Although Chapolin was ultimately submitted, it was still a very good showing for the Brazilian prospect—and I am beyond happy that he is finally in the promotion. He has elite striking, legitimate power and noticeably improved takedown defense. If he can address his cardio, Chapolin should have a successful UFC career filled with highlights — but then again, he was fighting on very short notice.

He should fight Lucas Rocha in his second Octagon appearance.

Final grade: C

Lucas Fernando

After an unsuccessful appearance on Season 7 of Contender Series, Lucas Fernando returned to the regional scene and rattled off four consecutive victories, including a win that earned him the LFA Light Heavyweight title.

That run earned Fernando the call to face fellow Brazilian Rafael Tobias at UFC 330.

And Fernando put on a show in his debut (watch highlights).

Fernando repeatedly cracked Tobias with nasty one-two combinations, body shots and push kicks. He was extremely quick, retaining his speed despite moving up from Middleweight. Tobias managed to take him down once, but Fernando did not remain grounded for long, quickly kicking his opponent away.

The second round was even more dominant. Fernando began destroying Tobias’ lead leg with calf kicks before dropping him with a power jab. He also narrowly missed several head kicks. At one point, Fernando held a ridiculous 60-9 advantage in significant strikes.

The finish finally arrived in the third round.

After landing even more calf kicks, Fernando connected with a knee to Tobias’ liver just one minute into the final frame. Tobias crumbled to the canvas, and Fernando immediately pounced to secure the stoppage.

Fernando looked absolutely phenomenal. He was fast, technical, and constantly kept Tobias guessing. He is a great addition to a Light Heavyweight division that desperately needs young talent.

Even more impressively, Fernando is also a very capable grappler—and he did not need to showcase that part of his game whatsoever.

I say put him against Mingyang Zhang for his second UFC appearance.

Final grade: A+
