The Field of Dreams Game is moving to a new network for its fourth edition.

Major League Baseball and Universal Pictures announced Friday that the Kansas City Royals will host the Boston Red Sox in the 2027 Field of Dreams Game, set for Thursday, Aug. 12, in Dyersville, Iowa, with NBC Sports carrying the game nationally. Netflix held the rights to this year’s edition, a 7-1 Phillies win over the Twins, as part of a three-event MLB package that also included Opening Night and the Home Run Derby, marking the streamer’s third live baseball broadcast.

Awful Announcing’s Megan Armstrong reviewed the broadcast and called it the strongest of the three Netflix MLB events to date, even if it wasn’t without its flaws.

The pregame hour, she wrote, was almost aggressively sentimental, opening with a cinematic Dyersville montage before ceding the floor to Kevin Costner and lines lifted from the original film. Sitting in the middle of the actual cornfield, Elle Duncan hosted a desk of Barry Bonds, Albert Pujols, and Anthony Rizzo, with Bonds delivering the broadcast’s most affecting moment, growing emotional as he described what it would mean to see his father walk out of the cornfield to play catch with him. Armstrong questioned whether an hour that heavy on nostalgia risked feeling oversaturated, but concluded that leaning all the way into the sap was the correct call for a broadcast built around this specific setting.

The actual game fared a little worse in her assessment. Matt Vasgersian, Hunter Pence and CC Sabathia had visibly better chemistry in their third broadcast together, and Roger Clemens joining the booth for an in-game interview with his son, Twins utility player Kody Clemens, gave the broadcast a real Field of Dreams-style father-son moment mid-game. But Armstrong called Netflix’s redesigned scorebug, rolled out after fan complaints about the smaller version used on Opening Night, the broadcast’s single biggest misstep, and she noted the game itself turned into a slog once the Phillies pulled away in a lopsided blowout.

She saved her warmest praise for the postgame, where Anthony Rizzo crashed Kyle Schwarber’s MVP interview with a run of what Armstrong called surprisingly funny “corny dad jokes,” and Roger and Kody Clemens followed through on a promise made earlier in the broadcast, playing catch together on the actual Field of Dreams set once the game wrapped. Her final grade landed on “the third time was the charm,” even as she acknowledged, via a Pat Sajak tweet, the irony of a game built around old-fashioned baseball nostalgia streaming exclusively on Netflix.

Kansas City’s game will be the fourth Field of Dreams game overall, following the White Sox’ 9-8 win over the Yankees in 2021, the Cubs’ 4-2 win over the Reds in 2022, and this year’s Twins-Phillies matchup, each played at the same Dyersville site immortalized by Universal’s 1989 film. This year’s game moved into a newly built permanent ballpark, replacing the temporary structure used for the 2021 and 2022 editions, and NBC Sports actually co-produced this year’s Netflix broadcast even before taking over the rights in 2027.

Netflix’s own MLB package runs through 2028 and still includes Opening Night and the Home Run Derby regardless of the Field of Dreams move, plus another special event game each year, a placeholder The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand and Sports Media Watch both reported remains unnamed for now.

The 2027 date counts as a Royals home game, with Thursday’s matchup followed by a Friday off day before Kansas City and Boston resume their three-game series at Kauffman Stadium that Saturday.
