Major League Baseball will return to the Field of Dreams Movie Site in 2027 and is bringing two teams that have yet to play in Dyersville. MLB announced on Friday, Aug. 14, that the Kansas City Royals and Boston Red Sox will take the field in Iowa on Aug. 12, 2027. The game will be televised nationally on NBC Sports. It’s the fourth MLB game to be played where the 1989 movie was filmed. “Field of Dreams” starred Kevin Costner, an Iowa farmer who plowed over his corn to build a baseball field.
Members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox emerged from the corn to play on the diamond that has since become a major tourist attraction. The Red Sox were briefly a part of the movie, with Costner and co-star James Earl Jones attending a game at the team's iconic Fenway Park. The first two MLB games at Dyersville were played at a temporary stadium. It housed a matchup between the White Sox and New York Yankees in 2021 and the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds in 2022. After a four-year hiatus, MLB returned to Iowa this year with a game between the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies on Aug. 13. The Phillies won 7-1. The latest installment of the Field of Dreams game was played in a permanent stadium at the same location, just a short walk from the movie site diamond. All three MLB games have been sellouts. FOX televised the first two games. Netflix was the broadcast partner for Thursday's game. “We are thrilled to showcase our athletes through one of Major League Baseball’s most cherished events and helping to grow the game to a worldwide audience, " Royals president of business operations Cullen Maxey said in a statement. "Royals territory already covers the Midwest, including Dyersville, so this is a natural fit that provides Royals fans a chance to cheer on the home team in a magical setting." The Red Sox are equally excited to be a part of the event. “To have the Red Sox take the field in Iowa, in a place that reminds us why people fall in love with baseball, will be incredibly special. Part of what has allowed baseball to endure for generations is its ability to evolve while still holding on to the traditions, memories and shared experiences that give the game its meaning," Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy said in the same statement. "We can’t wait to experience that in Dyersville with our players, our fans, and baseball fans everywhere.” This article originally appeared on Des Moines Register: Royals, Red Sox to play in 2027 MLB at Field of Dreams game
