Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano hosted a press conference following the team’s first scrimmage of summer training camp. In this press conference, he addressed things such as the quarterback’s race, how the new coaches are adapting to their roles, and why they decided to accept Temple defensive line transfer Sekou Kromah so late in the process.

Of course, one of the questions that was front and center in this press conference was the question of when a starting quarterback is going to be named. Rutgers fans who are eager to find out might not like what Schiano had to say in response.

“I thought they both played well, making it harder and harder. But Kirk and I watched it. We’ll all study the tape tonight, today, tonight. Then tomorrow we’ll have extensive meetings. If there is enough separation, we’ll make a decision. If there isn’t, we’ll just keep going,” said Schiano.

Schiano also pointed out that separation in the quarterback race could have to do with what teammates the quarterbacks are playing with, so they have to judge them fairly.

“It really has been a back-and-forth. The situation has something to do with that, too. When you’re working with eight (KJ Duff), that’s a fun one to work with. But I was really, really glad to see our young receivers step up and make plays. Not gimmies. Make plays,” said Schiano.

One of the questions that was asked had to do with the full game simulation that they were doing and how this environment can help simulate a level of intensity for the offensive line so they can see what they are truly made of.

“It’s really important because we had a full Big Ten crew here today. Officials. What can get you early in the season is penalties. You can’t have holding penalties. They kill you. Especially when you have a positive play, and it comes back. I thought they did a really good job of that. I think Coach Turner is doing a really good job with the offensive line. He’s got competition at just about every spot. And he’s not afraid to move people around. I think because he’s such a good conceptual teacher.

Finally, Schiano addressed why they decided to add Kromah in the transfer portal just before the start off the season.

“We wouldn’t have brought him here if we didn’t think he was a good player. I’ve seen him do some good things already. He’s only been here a few days. So, I think he definitely is. We wouldn’t have brought him at this stage unless we believed he could help us in ’26. So, he’s definitely going to do that. It’s just a matter of how fast we can get him integrated into what we’re doing,” said Schiano.

That begs the question of how much they are going to rely on him come the regular season. He is likely just another decent body who played at a lower level that the Knights could add to the rotation at a reasonable cost.
