The last time Rod Moore played a fully healthy snap for the Michigan Wolverines was in the National Championship in 2023. Two and a half years later, there’s optimism the program is finally getting him back in full force. After everything Moore has accomplished, being the face of conquering the Ohio State Buckeyes on the Wolverines’ run to the national title, his final season is about cementing his legacy and getting back the two years that injuries took away from him.

The story so far

Moore was a three-star prospect in the 2021 class, and Jim Harbaugh went into enemy territory in Ohio to earn his commitment. As a true freshman in 2021, Moore appeared in 11 games and started four of them. He made his first career appearance in the Week 1 win vs Western Michigan, eventually starting against Ohio State in Michigan’s first series win in nearly a decade and a half.

After starting in the Wolverines’ first College Football Playoff appearance against Georgia, it was clear the coaching staff had a ton of confidence in Moore at such a young age. That led to a sophomore season where Moore went from a fringe starter to a consistent, bookend safety for the Wolverines. He made 13 starts in 14 games, leading all defensive backs in tackles with 71 and a team-high four interceptions. Moore became a star in late-season performances, recording 14 tackles, a career high, against Purdue in the Big Ten Championship, as well as 12 tackles and an interception in the CFP loss to TCU. For the second season in a row, Moore performed his best in the moments when Michigan needed him the most.

Then came the true moment of Moore’s career, against the Buckeyes at home. With Ohio State driving down seven at the end of the game, Moore stepped in front of a Kyle McCord pass to seal the win and secure a spot in the Big Ten Championship and CFP:

It capped off Moore’s second-straight All-Big Ten season, where he recorded 38 tackles and two interceptions en route to being crowned a national champion.

Some expected the standout safety to go pro; instead, he announced he would be returning to Ann Arbor. But in the spring of 2024, Moore tore his ACL and meniscus in what would be a season-ending injury. He was still named a team captain, but unfortunately, a setback on his meniscus required a second surgery that pushed his recovery into 2025.

Before the 2025 season, there was a video of Moore running for the first time in more than a year. He gradually worked his way to a return in the win vs Nebraska, but he played just nine snaps. After a week of no practice due to pain management in that knee, Moore missed a game but then returned the following week against Wisconsin. For the first time in nearly two years, Moore picked off an opposing quarterback:

After attempting to play through some pain against USC the following week, Moore shut himself down for the remainder of the season. It was a disappointing end to something that felt so promising just a week prior.

Outlook for 2026

Back in January, Moore underwent a third surgery on his knee to remove some scar tissue while pursuing a medical waiver to return for another season. His waiver was approved in February, and now it appears Michigan could have a two-time captain as a starter heading into the new season.

The sixth-year vet was named a spring captain on the defensive side. According to the In The Trenches podcast, if Moore is named a captain for the 2026 season, he would be the first three-time captain in program history.

But it goes far beyond just the status symbol. Moore wants to play at an elite level once again, and safeties coach Tyler Stockton fully believes that’s possible. “My expectation of Rod is being one of the best safeties in the country,” he said in June.

Moore participated in Michigan’s first full fall practice on Aug. 5 and according to defensive coordinator Jay Hill, recorded an interception on his third play from scrimmage. Hill called Moore “completely healthy,” along with Utah transfer edge rusher John Henry Daley, and head coach Kyle Whittingham reaffirmed that during a recent press conference as well.

There’s a lot of hope heading into competition early this year that Moore’s return is more than a feel-good veteran comeback. Instead, Michigan could legitimately have an elite player returning to a defense that hopes to be much improved in 2026.
