By Callum McFadden at Fir Park.

Ibrahim Said stole the show at Fir Park as Motherwell secured a historic 2-0 victory over HJK Helsinki, capping a memorable night on the European stage and booking their place in the UEFA Conference League play-offs, where they will face Bundesliga side Freiburg.

The visitors’ experience in European competition was evident from the outset, with HJK dominating possession in the early stages as they looked to take the sting out of a raucous Fir Park atmosphere.

Toivo Mero almost silenced the home support inside the opening few minutes when he burst beyond the Motherwell backline and cut inside Emmanuel Longelo. However, his effort from a promising position flew into the side netting.

Motherwell gradually settled after a testing opening ten minutes and began to find their rhythm going forward, with Tawanda Maswanishe proving a constant threat whenever he was able to get on the ball.

The hosts went close to breaking the deadlock in the 17th minute when Longelo met the ball with a half-volley just inside the box, only to see his effort whistle narrowly past the post and into the side netting.

Moments later, Motherwell came close again as Maswanishe capitalised on some slack HJK defending to work an opening and fire towards goal, but opposing goalkeeper Matej Markovic was equal to the effort, parrying the shot away to keep the scores level.

Motherwell continued to grow in confidence as the half progressed, increasingly taking control of proceedings and putting HJK under sustained pressure, albeit without finding the opener they craved.

Ibrahim Said was the next Motherwell player to threaten on the cusp of the half-hour mark, curling a looping effort from just outside the box that narrowly cleared the crossbar.

Longelo remained a constant source of danger for the hosts and, in the 35th minute, created another promising opening by picking out Maswanishe with a low cross into the box, although the Zimbabwean was unable to steer his effort on target.

Longelo went close again in the closing stages of the half when he raced through on goal and unleashed a low-driven effort, but Markovic stood tall to deny him with his legs.

Neither side could find a breakthrough before the interval, but that all changed within a minute of the restart when Said produced a moment of real quality to put Motherwell ahead.

Receiving the ball from Martin Moorman on the left-hand side just outside the penalty area, Said showed excellent footwork to jink past two HJK defenders before curling a superb effort into the far corner of the net, leaving a helpless Markovic with no chance.

On the hour mark, Said produced another moment of individual brilliance to double Motherwell’s lead, carrying the ball from the edge of the centre circle into the HJK box before calmly poking his finish beyond Markovic following another slick passage of play from the hosts.

HJK responded with a triple substitution in an attempt to turn the tide, with former Celtic and Norwich striker Teemu Pukki introduced to provide an attacking spark. Pukki, who scored in last week’s first leg in Helsinki, was tasked with finding a route back into the tie for the visitors.

Despite the changes, Motherwell remained firmly in control and continued to push forward in search of a third, while HJK struggled to impose themselves on the game. Pukki was forced to drop deeper and deeper in search of possession, a telling reflection of the visitors’ growing frustration.

Alfred Johansson altered the shape of his side in the final ten minutes, introducing defender Ewan Wilson for the impressive Maswanishe, adding an extra layer of protection to shore up the Motherwell defence.

The tactical switch had the desired effect, with the hosts defending resolutely and retaining possession whenever possible to see out a historic European victory and book a Conference League play-off against Bundesliga side Freiburg.

Motherwell: Paulsen, Koutroumbis (Knight-Lebel, 65), Girdwood-Reich, Moorman, Longelo, Priestman (Whyte, 59), Fadinger, Lowry (Wilson, 78), Charles-Cook (Vogt, 65), Said, Maswanhise (Booth, 78).

Substitutes: Connelly, McConnell, Knight-Lebel, Wilson, Ross, Whyte, Booth, McAllister, Hunter, Thomson, Weir, Vogt.

HJK: Markovic, Simojoki, Tikkanen (Cissokho, 68), Nallo, Leonel Montano, Ring (Gueye, 74), Haarala (Kirilov, 68), Mentu, Cicale (Lappalainen, 79),, Borchers (Pukki, 68).
