St. Paul’s six-game winning streak last week is getting smaller and smaller in the rearview mirror as the Saints lost their fourth consecutive game, 10-3, to Iowa in Des Moines Thursday night.
The game started off well, as leadoff batter Walker Jenkins smashed his seventh home run of the season to give St. Paul a prompt 1-0 advantage.
It was almost all I-Cubs from there, however, as the hosts put up a half-dozen runs in the bottom of the first to all-but put the game away just six outs into the contest.
Iowa added a run in the second, two more in the fifth, and a final tally in the sixth to make its victory near-certain before Hendry Mendez’s seventh homer of the campaign in the eighth. However, Mendez’s two-run shot, which also scored Aaron Sabato, could draw the Saints no closer than the eventual final score.
The I-Cubs only out-hit St. Paul 10-8 in the game, but made their opportunities count with four homers on the night.
Jenkins went 3 for 5 to lift his batting average to .291, while Cody Morissette went 2 for 4 as the other Saints player with a multi-hit game.
All six of Iowa’s first-inning runs were charged to St. Paul starter Ricky Castro (3-2, 5.02 ERA), who lasted just 2/3 of the frame before being relieved by C.J. Culpepper.
The Saints are back in action on Friday with a 7:08 p.m. start in the heart of Iowa. Trent Baker (3-3, 5.40) takes the ball for St. Paul against Grant Kipp (1-0, 7.18) for the I-Cubs.
