For millions of NASCAR fans, Aug. 18 is now a day to remember one of the greatest drivers of his generation.
For Samantha and Brexton Busch, it means something far more personal.
As the NASCAR community celebrated “Kyle Busch Day” on Aug. 18, the late champion’s wife and son each shared their own tributes to the man behind Rowdy. Samantha remembered nearly 20 years with her husband and offered a glimpse at the sides of Kyle the rest of the world rarely saw. Brexton, meanwhile, reflected on the father who taught him how to race, pushed him to improve and made No. 18 mean far more than a number on a car.
Together, their messages captured something a trophy case never could.
Samantha Busch Remembers the Kyle the World Didn’t Always See

Samantha marked Kyle Busch Day with an eight-part tribute centered on the different pieces of the man she spent nearly two decades loving.
“The world knew Rowdy, the champion, the competitor, the bow and that unmistakable personality,” Samantha wrote. “But I was lucky enough to know every side of Kyle, especially the ones the world didn’t always get to see.”
Her tribute moved far beyond Busch’s racing career.
She remembered him as her husband and best friend, as the father of Brexton and Lennix, as an intensely competitive man who wanted to win at everything, and as someone who was unapologetically himself.
But some of Samantha’s most poignant words came when she described the Kyle who belonged only to his family.
“The world got Rowdy, but I got Kyle,” she wrote in one of the slides. “I got his soft side, his affection, his ridiculous humor, his hand reaching for mine and the little ways he made me feel loved every day. Those are the pieces of him I find myself aching for the most now.”
Samantha also remembered Busch as a builder and mentor, highlighting his desire to create things from the ground up and the time he devoted to helping the people he believed in.
Her eighth and final tribute distilled it all into three words: “One of one.”
“There will never be another Rowdy but more than anything there will never be another Kyle,” Samantha wrote in the accompanying post. “My best friend, my other half, the daddy to our babies and the person I thought I would grow old beside.”
She closed simply: “I love you and miss every single piece of you.”
Brexton Busch Explains What No. 18 Really Means to Him
Brexton’s tribute came from a different perspective, but carried just as much weight.
The young racer shared a photo alongside his father and the No. 18, explaining that the number has been part of his life for reasons that extend well beyond his Aug. 18 birthday.
“18. My favorite number not only because it’s my birthday, but also because I saw my dad kick everyone’s butt in it almost every week growing up,” Brexton wrote.
But Brexton’s message quickly became about much more than watching his father win races.
“I wanted to be just like him and I chose to race it when I started racing,” he continued. “While I wanted to be like him, he wanted me to be better than him.”
That distinction may say as much about Kyle Busch the father as almost anything written about him on Aug. 18.
Brexton recalled his dad teaching him everything he knew, working on his race cars, spotting for him and even racing against him eight times while Kyle drove the No. 8.
“He beat me more than I beat him, but he knew the score would be in my favor sooner rather than later,” Brexton wrote. “I know he is proud of me.”
He finished with a line that connected the meaning of the date, the number and his father’s influence.
“8.18 is a reflection of him and what he instilled in me. Every race is for him.”
For NASCAR, Aug. 18 is Kyle Busch Day.
For his family, 8/18 carries a lifetime of meaning.
And for Brexton Busch, every time he climbs behind the wheel, a piece of that legacy goes with him.
