A group led by José E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones agreed to buy the San Diego Padres for a record $3.9 billion in May of this year. The sale has now been formally approved by the other owners.
The Seidler family announced their plans to explore a sale of the San Diego Padres in late 2025. Since the passing of Peter Seidler in 2023, this had seemed like a real possibility.
Earlier in 2026, news broke that an agreement had been reached to sell the team to an investor group led by José E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones for a record $3.9 billion.
Even after an agreement, there is a lengthy process before a franchise sale can be completed. And now, it seems the final hurdle has been crossed.

MLB owners unanimously approve San Diego Padres sale, ownership transition and press conference scheduled
After taking over a new team, ownership will generally hold a press conference. That is just one of the many moving parts in transitioning between old and new ownership.
Now, as per a statement from the team’s official account, owners of the other franchises have approved the sale. The media availability, as well as the other formalities, will occur soon.
“The San Diego Padres today announced that Major League Baseball and its owners have unanimously approved the transfer of control of the franchise to a new ownership group led by Kwanza Jones and José E. Feliciano, who will jointly lead the club’s ownership group and long-term stewardship,” reads the statement.
“Feliciano has been designated as the Padres’ Control Person in accordance with MLB governance requirements. The Padres will continue to be led day-to-day by Chief Executive Officer Erik Greupner and President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller.
“The closing of the transaction and ownership transition is scheduled to occur in the coming days, and a media advisory will follow with the date and time for a press conference at Petco Park introducing the new Padres owners.”
This is a big moment in the history of the team. The Padres have never won a World Series, and under new ownership, fans will be fervently hoping that this changes.
