New York Liberty forward Satou Sabally is taking time away from the team as she recovers from a head injury. Liberty head coach Chris DeMarco announced during a group media availability that Sabally would be away from the team for some time. She was injured in the team's matchup against the Las Vegas Aces on June 23. DeMarco emphasized that Sabally's health comes first as she continues to recover. "She's going to be away from the team for a little bit. It's her second significant head injury in the past 12 months," DeMarco said. Second Significant Head Injury In 12 Months The Oregon product signed a multi-year contract with New York during the offseason after reaching the WNBA Finals as a member of the Phoenix Mercury in 2025. During the finals, she suffered a severe concussion in Game 3 on October 8. Sabally missed Game 4 of the WNBA Finals and the second season of Unrivaled, a three-on-three basketball league. This season she played 13 games and started five of them. The 6-foot-4 forward is averaging 10.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.9 assists while shooting 38.5 percent from three. She last played against the Aces in June where she only played eight minutes due to sustaining a head injury. Liberty Finding Their Stride Down The Stretch Currently, the Liberty are 21-14 on the season. The team struggled to find a rhythm earlier in the season due to injury, defensive lapses, and inconsistent offense. However, New York has gained momentum and continues to improve. The team is 8-2 in its last ten games and has protected home court. New York is first in the league for three-pointers made (357), with the highest percentage of free-throw percentage at 85.1 percent, and third in rebounds per game at 35.3. The Liberty recently waived Betnijah Laney-Hamilton on Aug. 6. She was one of the team's top defenders, but her playing time was limited. She sat out the entire 2025 season to rehab her knee. Despite moving on from Laney-Hamilton, the team has found its stride and is positioned to move up in the standings. New York sits in sixth in the league standings with nine games remaining in the regular season. Breanna Stewart leads the team in scoring (21), steals (1.3), and blocks (1.4) per game while playing the most minutes per game (33.1) on the roster. Of the Liberty's final nine games, four are against teams with records below .500. Their next game will be on Aug. 15 against the Connecticut Sun at 1:00 p.m. EST.
