Saud Shakeel struck an unbeaten hundred in Pakistan's three-day warm-up match against a Professional County Club Select XI at Beckenham, helping his side overturn a 67-run first-innings deficit and chase down 262 on the final day with seven wickets to spare. Pakistan maintained a run rate of 4.61 during the chase, completing a convincing victory ahead of the first Test against England at Headingley in Leeds, which begins on August 19.

Shakeel's previous ten Test innings had produced only 189 runs at an average of under 19, and he had sat out both Tests in the West Indies owing to fitness concerns. The PCB confirmed on July 5 that he was included in the squad for the England series subject to fitness clearance. Shakeel acknowledged the challenge that awaits.

"Every Test is challenging. Test cricket brings a new challenge every day. This is no different, and we're trying to make sure we give the best account of ourselves here," Shakeel said to Cricinfo.

What does Shakeel's record outside Asia tell us about his England challenge?

Shakeel's numbers reveal a sharp split across different conditions. He averages over 50 across 27 home innings, but that figure falls to 33.56 in 17 innings on foreign soil and drops further to around 21 across 10 innings outside Asia. The three-match England series will be his first opportunity to bat in a Test on English soil, making it a genuine examination of how his technique holds up in these conditions.

His only prior exposure to English pitches came in 2023, when he represented Yorkshire across three matches and scored 71 runs in five innings. That brief county stint offers some familiarity, though the demands of Test cricket at Headingley represent a considerably different proposition. Shakeel reflected on what he observed at Beckenham and what he anticipates at Headingley.

"I'm not certain what conditions will be like in the first Test, but here it was slightly dry and the ball was turning as well. From what I know of Headingley from playing at Yorkshire, that pitch will have some bounce. I think it will be slightly different," he said.

What are Pakistan's other selection concerns ahead of the first Test?

Pakistan carry significant uncertainty into Headingley beyond Shakeel's own form. Shan Masood and Babar Azam both sustained hand injuries while batting during the tour, and their availability for the first Test had not been confirmed as of now. Abdullah Fazal has been ruled out of the entire England Test series with a back issue, adding further pressure to the squad's resources.

The warm-up victory offered some reassurance despite those concerns. Pakistan's ability to chase at a considerable run rate on the final day of a three-day match demonstrated that their batting unit can perform under pressure in English conditions, even without certainty over their top-order availability.

"It's very good preparation for the Test series. The pitch was challenging early on but it got better after a couple of days. In the end we have to prepare ourselves for the first Test, and that's what's good about performing out there," Shakeel added.

The series continues with the second Test at Lord's from August 27-31, and the third at Edgbaston in Birmingham from September 9-13.
