The Colts have begun their preseason preparations for the season, with not much time left until the new season begins. They completed their first preseason game against last season’s AFC Champions, the New England Patriots on August 13, 2026.
The game ended 13-13 with no overtime, and both teams appeared to be underwhelming. Despite the game being a low-scoring fixture, one particular moment relating to a Colts coach has gone viral.
Colts special teams coordinator Brian Mason suffers injury during preseason opener
Colts special teams coordinator Brian Mason suffered a knee injury on the final play of the team’s preseason opener against the Patriots.
As the score was tied at the end moments of the game, Colts quarterback Riley Leonard attempted a Hail Mary pass that fell incomplete. Mason stood near the sideline observing the play when a Colts player and a Patriots player were involved in a rough exchange, with their momentum carrying them off the field and into the Colts area. Mason tried to move away but was knocked down in the collision, which resulted in a possible knee injury.
A viral video captured him immediately screaming in pain and rolling on the turf after the collision. Colts medical staff treated him on the field before taking him to the locker room for evaluation. It has been revealed that he flew back to Indianapolis with the franchise that night. More evaluation on his injury has been planned, but no specific information has been revealed yet by the team.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen said, “He got rolled up right on the sideline that last play. So we’ll see. He’s getting evaluated for his knee right now.” It is unknown whether he will be available for the team in the coming days.
Aftermath of Colts’ Brian Mason’s injury
Mason is currently in his fourth season as the special teams coordinator for the Colts. He previously held the same role at college level for Notre Dame. It remains to be seen whether the franchise will have to find a replacement for him in the next games, and who will step up in his role.
Such injuries happen rarely, but it is not the first time a coach has been injured standing on the sidelines. Just last season, Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn had a collision with Marcus Mariota which led to him getting a bloodied face.
The Colts will have to prepare for the next preseason game, which is against the Atlanta Falcons.
